Lennie Tristano was, undoubtedly, one of the more radical artists in Modern Jazz. As a pianist, Tristano brought about a very personal approach to the Bop idiom, based upon purity of sound and emotional restrainment, this original approach was in the origins of the cool school. This 20-bit remastered CD gathers some of the more distinguished samples of Tristano's approach to piano, a style which today still manages to sound unusual and instructive. This 2005 Definitive Records reissue adds two bonus tracks of superb recordings by the Metronome All Stars 'Overtime' and 'Victory Ball'. Includes new cover sleeve, artwork and photographs.
This CD gathers some of the more distinguished samples of Tristano’s approach to piano, a style which today still manages to sound unusual and instructive. We have included solo and trio performances, plus recordings of Tristano with different groups featuring Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, his most accomplished pupils. A style of jazz which can be doubtless be defined as Spartan and complex, though it is also fascinating and tremendously expressive. As a bonus, we have added two superb recordings by the Metronome All Stars; of particular interest is Victory Ball, where the pianist performs a perfect, dramatic “cascade” solo. |
