THE GERMANIC-BRITISH BLUES-HURRICANE

At the 2006 Herzberg Festival in Germany, there was not only a succession of regular acts, but also - for one night only - a specially assembled super session, which was to create a chapter of Blues history that will remain unique in this form: THE HERZBERG BLUES ALL STARS. On the evening of the 23rd July, 2006, a virtual "Who’s Who" of the European Blues scene strolled into the backstage tent behind tha main Herzberg arena.

At the front, the race had begun: at least on four cylinders. The HAMBURG BLUES BAND quartet delivered the slogan of the night with their "Rockin’ Chair" - Blues Rock that gets you off your chair! HBB boss Gert Lange cooked a dried and dense guitar rhythm, which should get him an honorary membership with Dr. Feelgood. He showed solid slide fills and a majestic lead vocal - in the face of crazy competition that we will get to. A powerful voice was also Lange’s ticket to survive the attacks by the glowing, unbeatable Alex Conti on lead guitar. Whether it was their dramatic "Make My Day" or the boogie "Real Stuff", the two front men were carried by the strong & sensitive drum groove courtesy of Hans Wallbaum and the elastic bass of Bexo Becker, whose harmony singing brought an air of West Coast into the Blues.

In order to augment their rhythm into a cinematographic wide screen sound, famous Brits assisted from that moment on: 10CC and CAMELdrummer Paul Burgess with Kris Gray, the EDGAR BROUGHTON BAND bass player, while our outside-left axeman Conti got the virtual genius of one Clem Clempson for his right side - yes, folks, the COLOSSEUM and HUMBLE PIE hero. This trio helped the HBB to do their tried and tested cover of Fleetwood Mac’s legendary "Rattlesnake Shake". Conti as well as Clempson were able to deliver in ways both tough and tender - it speaks volumes for the experience of these musicians that the night was not limited to guitar battles, but the interlocking of two virtuosos. Subsequently, Clempson surprised his audience with a mature vocal delivery of the standard "Done Somebody Wrong". Many had not heard him sing since he did "Take Me Back To Doomsday" in 1970.

Obviously, the only possible anchorman of this All Star Summit was Blues Pavarotti and COLOSEUMS’s Progressive Giant Chris Farlowe - and it was up to him to thank the crowd for the wonderful atmosphere of this Herzberg event, as unique as the All Stars in fact. Farlowe’s Opera cum R&B voice worked impressively for "Lonesome Road" or the emotionally charged "I Don’t Want To Sing The Blues No More". The creation of wild piano attacks and ear-creeping, wailing Hammond sound was left to ATLANTIS Blues veteran Adrian Askew, who these days works mainly with LAKE. Chris Fralowe’s voice was then complemented with an impressive contrast, delivered by the smoky, melancholic timbre of SPOOKY TOTTH and part time HBB lead singer Mike Harrison - who was singing about standing on "Shaky Ground".

Apart from literal powerhouse values, this one off Blues project also gained considerable poetic profoundness, brought on by the singer, percussionist and, of course, poet Pete Brown. His lyrics graced many CREAM hits and songs by the HBB. Here, while beating a truly hypnotic cowbell, he gave us "Waiting For The Call", which he once dreamt up for Jack Bruce, and the great "Sunshine Of Your Love". Another solid singing voice, Pete Brown was obviously so well rehearsed that he and Chris Farlowe could exchange vocal lines in mid-sentence with a precision and a relaxed aura that the lyrical flow of this evergreen never suffered. A similar affection for detail was maintained behind the frontline. Never since the famous "Concert For George" Harrison could an audience witness such a congenial harmony between two drummers as in the case of the Siamese twins Wallbaum & Burgess: Beating out "Sunshine", they managed the same groove, same fills, same rolls. And all of it in an inspiring live-stereo-effect on top of this famous riff, which apart from the guitars was kept well in line by keyboard man Frank Tischer.

A dazzling dozen musicians who played as one on this festival stage - and this left the crowed singing with them what they must have been feeling genuinely in that instant: "Got What I Want"
