"Cary's vision of mainstream jazz packs a powerful punch." -- Entertainment Weekly
"One of the four most versatile keyboard players in jazz." -- DownBeat
"A provocative, high-octane pianist and bandleader." -- Village Voice
"Cary is one of only a few pianists to tackle the sound and percussion of Duke Ellington and Randy Weston." -- New York Times

With inimitable style, Marc Cary and his FOCUS Trio fuse together East Asian, Indian, African, and Native American influences within the African-American blues and jazz traditions.
Cary has earned four Grammy nominations for his ensemble work--most recently, a 2009 nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album as a participant of Stefon Harris's/Blackout on Urbanis. His production work on Q-Tip's The Renaissance helped earn that disc a nomination for Best Rap Album of 2009.
His power, imagination, and versatility are fueled by his many collaborations with a stellar array of popular artists in the jazz, R&B, and pop arenas including Me'Shell N'degeocello, Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Carter, Erykah Badu, Jackie McLean, Ani DiFranco, Wynton Marsalis, and many more.

Marc Cary

Active Decade: '90s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Jazz Instrument, Piano Jazz

Raised in Washington, D.C., Marc Cary has become known as one of the most original jazz pianists in New York. A man of eclectic tastes, Cary has a strong post-bop foundation but has also explored Afro-Cuban rhythms, electronic groove music, and other directions with his various ensembles. Upon arriving in New York, Cary was taken under the wing of Mickey Bass and Beaver Harris. His first big-time gigs came in the early '90s with Arthur Taylor, Betty Carter, and Roy Hargrove. In 1994, he became Abbey Lincoln's pianist and arranger.
Cary's own records have shown great promise, beginning with 1994's Cary On. Two releases for Arabesque followed, Listen in 1996 and The Antidote in 1998. An uncharacteristic electronica project titled Rhodes Ahead, Vol. 1 appeared in 1999, as did a live album by Cary's world music group Indigenous People (both on the Jazzateria label). Cary's acoustic trio released Trillium in early 2000.
---David R. Adler, All Music Guide

As brilliant a jazz pianist as Marc Cary has always been, he continues as an exploratory performer, seeking new avenues and vistas that challenge his adventuresome spirit. With his Focus Trio featuring bassist David Ewell and drummer Sameer Gupta, he seems to have found everything needed in order to complete his visionary quest. These live performances done in Colorado, Switzerland, and two cities in Italy (Rome and Fano) comprise some of his most exciting work, as well as carrying out the thoughtful, inventive characteristics that have marked him as a true individualist. There are adaptations of standards like his incredibly fresh treatment of the well-worn '''Round Midnight," done anew in modal ostinato trim, and exuberant hard bop such as his original waltz "Runnin' Out of Time" and the boiling, highly dramatic cover of Jackie McLean's "Minor March." As a quick thinker, Cary is able to transmit impulses to musical phrases with no hitches, but he also uses two-handed chiming effects à la McCoy Tyner, inside-the-piano string effects, and on occasion electric keyboards, too. The hyperkinetic "CD Changer" uses many short themes between acoustic and amplified keyboards and the contemporary, funky hip-hop attitude that has identified some of his other projects. Even ethnic East Indian raga with tabla (courtesy of Bismillah Khan) can be heard. This tour de force effort needs rapt attention to hear everything that is going on, but it's well worth the concentrated effort in appreciating true genius at work, as only Marc Cary can deliver it. ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide
