This is Vincent Herring's third CD as leader for HighNote and his best. This is Vincent's working band featuring the hot young trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and a fresh face on piano, Danny Grissett, Richie Goods, bass and E.J. Strickland, drums. A leader since he landed in New York in the mid Eighties, Vincent played with the late Nat Adderley though most of the 90's. Vincent co-leads the Three Altos Sextet with Sonny Fortune and Gary Bartz and the Cannonball Legacy Band with Louis Hayes. Ever busy on tour of Europe and the US, Vincent Herring is most visible on the New York scene where he is a familiar face in the top jazz venues in the City.

Vincent Herring is complemented by rising young trumpeter Jeremy Pelt on this enjoyable studio date. "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" is a standard from the swing era, though the quintet translates it into a hard bop vehicle very well, with the leader throwing in a quick reference to another song ("Kerry Dance") from long ago. Herring is a bit playful in his treatment of the ballad "You Leave Me Breathless," while he handles McCoy Tyner's explosive "Four by Five" with finesse. But most of the session is devoted to originals by the band. Bassist Richie Goods contributed the funky, infectious "Citizen of Zamunda," which showcases the leader on his dancing soprano sax. Pianist Danny Grissert, who evidently made his recording debut with this CD, not only proves himself as a capable soloist, but also penned the exciting "Hopscotch" (marked by its use of stop time) and the tense "Encounters." Pelt wrote the relaxed yet intricate "Cassius" and the bittersweet waltz "The Walk Home." Herring wraps this successful outing by cooking on all burners with the band in his brisk modal work "Mr. Wizard." hard bop fans will want to snap up this delightful CD without hesitation. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Born: Nov 19, 1964 in Hopkinsville, KY
Genre: Jazz

It was only fitting that Vincent Herring gained his first important recognition playing with Nat Adderley, for his sound is strongly influenced by his idol, Cannonball Adderley. Born in Kentucky and raised in California, Herring moved to New York in 1983, and played with a variety of major musicians (including Lionel Hampton, David Murray, Horace Silver, and Art Blakey) before joining Adderley (1987-1993). Vincent Herring, who has recorded for Landmark and Music Masters, has led his own group since the early '90s.
