This debut album recorded in 1988 features saxophonist, Vincent Herring, as a leader, accompanied by an outstanding cast which includes Robert Hurst on bass, Darrell Grant on keyboards and drummer Jack DeJohnette.
Vincent Herring's recording debut as a leader was originally released on the Japanese Somethin' Else label and reissued in the U.S. by Evidence a decade later. Recorded shortly before Herring began playing with Nat Adderley's group, Scene One features Herring not sounding as influenced by Cannonball Adderley as he would become, although there are hints of Cannonball during his romp on "What Is This Thing Called Love?." Herring sounds Trane-ish on "Elation" and purposely hints at Charlie Rouse on "Roused About" but generally sounds quite original, both on alto and soprano (during "Almost"). Pianist Darrell Grant takes some impressive solos, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Jack DeJohnette push the lead voices, and Kris Defoort sits in on DeJohnette's "Where or Wayne" on synthesizer. The music overall is straight-ahead, adventurous, passionate and mostly high-powered. Scene One, though somewhat obscure, was a very impressive debut for Vincent Herring, who has since lived up to his great potential. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Vincent Herring
Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s Born: Nov 19, 1964 in Hopkinsville, KY Genre: Jazz Styles: Post-Bop, Hard Bop, Straight-Ahead Jazz, Jazz Instrument, Saxophone Jazz
It was only fitting that Vincent Herring gained his first important recognition playing with Nat Adderley, for his sound is strongly influenced by his idol, Cannonball Adderley. Born in Kentucky and raised in California, Herring moved to New York in 1983, and played with a variety of major musicians (including Lionel Hampton, David Murray, Horace Silver, and Art Blakey) before joining Adderley (1987-1993). Vincent Herring, who has recorded for Landmark and Music Masters, has led his own group since the early '90s. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
