Featuring Ben Goldberg on clarinet, Devin Hoff on bass and Scott Amendola on drums & production. Devin Hoff and Scott Amendola are the great rhythm team for the Nels Cline Singers. Devin, Scott & clarinet wiz, Ben Goldberg, are also members of Nels Cline's New Monastery / Andrew Hill project. On this rich offering, the trio plays ten Thelonius Monk compositions in their own quirky way. Skippy is taken at a brisk tempo and has an infectious, happy vibe. Very nice to hear this trio playing a few of the rarer Monk tunes like Shuffle Boil and Boo Boo's Birthday. What makes this disc so fine is the way the trio plays these tunes, all of which were written at and often feature a piano at the center. With spirited versions of Little Rootie Tootie, Four in One; and Teo; how can they go wrong? An excellent offering.

Scott Amendola

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Funk, Modern Creative, Worldbeat, Fusion, Avant-Garde Jazz

Scott Amendola landed in San Francisco in 1992 after graduating from Berklee College of Music. He met guitarist Charlie Hunter soon after arriving in San Francisco. The two joined forces along with Will Bernard and John Schott to form the innovative band TJ Kirk (Warner Bros.). TJ Kirk went on to be nominated for a Grammy in 1995. A year and a half later, Scott joined the Charlie Hunter Quartet. The band toured worldwide and recorded three records for Blue Note. "Amendola has complete mastery of every piece of his drumset and the ability to create a plethora of sounds using sticks, brushes, mallets, and even his hands," explains Steven Raphael of Modern Drummer magazine. "There is a phenomenal interaction of five distinct musical voices. Amendola and his hand-picked crew take improvisation to new heights." For Amendola "it’s all about improvisation and opening up the music so that anything can happen."

Ben Goldberg

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Klezmer, Progressive Jazz, Avant-Garde Jazz, Jewish Music

Clarinetist Ben Goldberg was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, later earning an undergraduate music degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a subsequent Master of Arts in Composition from Mills College. A student of Rosario Mazzeo, Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano, Goldberg initially won acclaim as a member of the New Klezmer Trio, debuting in 1991 with Masks and Faces; two years later he won a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to mount a retrospective series spotlighting the music of key American jazz composers including Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols, a project on which he collaborated with the likes of Andrew Hill and Bobby Bradford. After teaming with Kenny Wollesen for the 1993 LP The Relative Value of Things, Goldberg resurfaced two years later with another New Klezmer Trio record, Melt Zonk Rewire; with the group Snorkel, he also contributed to 1996's Live at the Elbo Room. In 1998, Goldberg headlined no less than four new recordings -- Eight Phrases for Jefferson Rubin, Twelve Minor, Here by Now and What Comes Before.
