With Stapleton moving between Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, this is hi-energy jazz. It is music to feed the mind and move the body. This is the bands third album and confirms Stapleton's position as composer and leader of one of the most innovative and exciting bands on the European Jazz scene.

Pianist, band-leader, composer and label boss Dave Stapleton is one of the heroes of the British jazz scene. Inspired by his love of the vibrant 70’s jazz scene (Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi and Keith Jarrett’s European Quartet with Jan Garbarek) as well as the lush orchestration of Gil Evans, Between the Lines, his third recording with his quintet, is his most accomplished and complete statement to date. Full of robust melodies, hard hitting grooves and fiery playing Between the Lines is a powerful, engaging work packed with a warmth and a depth that is utterly compelling. Incorporating musical ideas driven by his pursuit in excellence he draws upon a formidable grasp of Jazz, Classical and World styles (Stapleton is a fan of Ravel and Satie) which creates a sense of space and fluidity that brings outs the best in this superb band.
Following two highly successful releases and a series of UK and European tours the music here is written for and features his long-standing quintet, with Stapleton setting out to capture the personalities of his band: the intensely melodic Dry White is for Paula Gardiner (that’s all she drinks), the fiery suite-like Horn for Jonny Bruce (Derek and Clive reference), the intricately dense Wig Wag for Ben Waghorn and the rhythmical punchy Daz Lightyear for Elliot Bennett (he always wears white and looks like Buzz Lightyear). |
