Alto saxophonist Rosario Giuliani is joined by a rhythm section of fellow Italians for this 1997 concert, which consists primarily of classic jazz compositions. The leader quickly ducks out of McCoy Tyner's grooving "Blues on the Corner" to shine the spotlight on his talented pianist, the grizzled veteran Franco D'Andrea, who is one of the first-called players when stars such as Phil Woods or Lee Konitz need supporting musicians for dates in the old country. Giuliani is no slouch himself, wailing with the best of them in John Coltrane's "Impressions," delivering a heartfelt solo (at times reminiscent of Woods) in the timeless ballad "What's New," and leading a roller-coaster bop interpretation of the one standard of the evening, "Lover." Although this Philology CD is not one likely to be found in the average music store, a search on the web will help bop fans quickly locate this recommended disc. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Voted the best new talent in the 2000 critics poll Top Jazz conducted by a top-rated music magazine, Rosario Giuliani became seriously involved in the European jazz scene in 1997. The talented alto saxophonist achieved a first place at Brussels' Europe Jazz Contest, a major festival that led him to get a record deal with the Parisian label Dreyfus Jazz, named after Francis Dreyfus. Frosinone's Conservatory of Music graduate Rosario Giuliani joined the Giovani Talenti del Jazz Europeo, a European jazz orchestra sponsored by the Italian Broadcasting System RAI, before assembling the Giuliani Quartet along with pianist Pitero Lussu, bassist Dario Rosciglioni, and drummer Di Leonardo. ---Drago Bonacich, All Music Guide |
