Join together with us and be filled with joyous wonder as Ralph Bowen makes another forceful statement of mastery on his instrument. Enjoy the stunning lyricism as he takes us through another tour de force program of his original compositions, where every song is a musical message of gratitude paying "Due Reverence" to one of Bowen's mentors. The tenor saxophonist swings and soars on the date with the incredible support of an all-star rhythm section comprised of guitarist Adam Rogers, bassist Jon Patittucci, and drummer Antonio Sanchez. The sonic and harmonic results are simply amazing and special guest Sean Jones even drops in for a song to lend the sounds of his trumpet to the mix. Meanwhile, Ralph Bowen leads by example and makes sure the entire session stays cohesive, hard-hitting, and headed ever onward with "Due Reverence" towards the open ears of jazz fans everywhere.

A veteran of many different bands since the mid-'80s, having worked with Benny Carter, Horace Silver, Orrin Evans, Ralph Peterson, and as a member of Out of the Blue, tenor saxophonist Ralph Bowen had little chance to record as a leader until the start of the 21st century. But he seems to be catching up for lost time, and finally recording for a domestic label, Posi-Tone. His second release for the label features five rewarding originals, with help from guitarist Adam Rogers, bassist John Pattitucci, and drummer Antonio Sanchez. Each piece is dedicated to a musician, starting with "Less Is More," saluting the late guitarist Ted Dunbar (who recorded little as a leader). Bowen's lush tenor floats over Rogers' spacious guitar, with a bit of a Latin undercurrent. Bandleader and fellow tenorist Bob Mintzer is honored with the explosive "This One's for Bob," in which Bowen's furious tenor never loses focus. "Philos-Ophy" is dedicated to Canadian clarinetist/composer Phil Nimmons (an artist who has been on the scene for decades but is little known outside his homeland), this intricate bop theme will provoke foot-tapping. Trumpeter Sean Jones is added for the somewhat funky "Mr. Scott," providing a perfect foil for the leader. This enjoyable outing gets better with every hearing. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Ralph Bowen

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Soul Jazz, Post-Bop, Hard Bop, Jazz Instrument, Piano Jazz

A good soloist and player, Ralph Bowen was at one time part of the group Out of the Blue. They were the pet project at one time of Blue Note, who were looking for a contemporary hard bop band with which to exploit "young lion" publicity craze. Bowen has since played with several groups, notably pianist Renee Rosnes' band.
