Ben Monder - guitar
Bill McHenry - saxophone

On their stunning duo release Bloom, guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Bill McHenry boldly exhibit total simpatico, complete trust in each other, and the ability to thoroughly listen to each other to bring forth a true work of musical art. On ten tracks they take the listener to a spectacular soundworld of textural chords, evocative percussive effects, spontaneously created melodies, and deep musical telepathy. Monder, whom Pat Metheny described as "a very evolved kind of musician", and The New York Times wrote was "a terror on his instrument", plays with an ethereal sound that recalls the best of Jim Hall and John Abercrombie, and has put his sonic stamp on the New York scene for the past fifteen years, with a plethora of stars including Guillermo Klein and Maria Schneider.
McHenry's comprehensive and colossal saxophone sound - a mainstay with a variety of artists from Paul Motian to Norah Jones - purrs instead of pounces, seduces rather than shouts, and caresses instead of crashes. Together, Monder and McHenry navigate through a sea of melodic complexity, in a number of rhythmic and harmonic contexts toward a bold, new vista of twenty first century improvisation.

Ben Monder

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Born: 1962 in New York, NY
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Avant-Garde Jazz, Guitar Jazz, Jazz Instrument, Post-Bop

Guitarist Ben Monder has secured his place as one of most identifiable and sought-after stylists on the progressive jazz scene, an heir to the ethereal yet edgy approach of players such as John Abercrombie and Bill Frisell. Schooled at the University of Miami and Queens College, Monder has been active as a sideman since 1984, working with Jack McDuff, Marc Johnson, David Binney, Paul Motian, Lee Konitz, Toots Thielmans, and Maria Schneider, to name a few. Recently he has recorded and performed in groups led by Drew Gress, Guillermo Klein, Reid Anderson, Bill McHenry, Patrick Zimmerli, Tim Ries, Donny McCaslin, Frank Kimbrough, singer/songwriter Jane Kelly Williams, and the Basque rock artist Ruper Ordorika. Monder released his own trio's debut, Flux, in 1995. A collaboration with vocalist Theo Bleckmann, titled No Boat, appeared a year later. Dust, Monder's second trio outing, came out in 1997, followed by Excavation in 2000.

Bill McHenry

Active Decade: '90s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Avant-Garde Jazz, Post-Bop

Tenor saxophonist Bill McHenry has become widely known in NY for his work both as a leader and sideman. Born in Blue Hill, ME in 1972, McHenry entered Michigan's Interlochen Arts Academy in 1986 and then attended New England Conservatory in 1990, studying with George Garzone, Jimmy Giuffre, and John McNeil. He relocated to NY in the fall of 1992 and became active in the jazz scene. During part of 1996 he lived in Barcelona, collaborating on a live album with pianist Ben Waltzer titled Jazz Is Where You Find It.
McHenry's debut as a leader was 1997's Rest Stop. The follow-up, titled Graphic, was released in 1999 and was one of New York Times critic Ben Ratliff's top ten "alternative picks" for that year. Since then McHenry has recorded and performed with Ethan Iverson, Rebecca Martin, Ben Waltzer, John Stech, Reid Anderson, Ben Monder, the Chris Lightcap Quartet, and the Guillermo Klein Big Band. His own group, the Bill McHenry Quartet, boasts Ben Monder on guitar, Reid Anderson on bass, and Gerald Cleaver on drums.
