The names of Troy Donockley and Dave Bainbridge will be familiar to fans of progressive rock and Celtic music. Not only are both members of one of the premier Celtic progressive rock bands Iona but they both have thriving solo careers and in the case of Troy Donockley a thriving session and production career to his credit also.

In addition to recording albums and touring with Iona over the last twelve months Troy has played sessions for Mostly Autumn and produced and played on the recent album from Barbara Dickson. Troy also released his second solo album in 2004 the Pursuit Of Illusion, which was the follow up to his debut solo album 1998 The Unseen Stream.

Dave Bainbridge in addition to writing and touring with Iona has managed to release his debut solo album in 2004 the mainly instrumental Veil Of Gossamer.

While Iona was taking a short sabbatical both Troy and Dave decided to work together on a project that has become the album From Silence.

The album is made up of five pieces entitled From Silence parts one through six.

"With no music prepared, just an idea of which instruments we might play, we decided from the outset to seek our inspiration from our surroundings and the cathedral's acoustics, so that the music would, in some way become part of the building, and aspire, for the 70 minutes or so that we played without a break, to something beyond ourselves".

This DVD is the companion piece to the CD release and features the live performance filmed in Lincoln Cathedral. The bonus features on the DVD also include interviews with Troy Donockley and Dave Bainbridge and also an interview about the binaural recording process, which is a feature of the CD.

Last year Troy Donockley (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Uilllian Pipes, Low and Tin Whisle) and Dave Bainbridge (keyboards, Electric Guitar and Bouzouki) from Iona made an album which they recorded together at Lincoln Cathedral. This album "From Silence" was one big improvisation. In my review I mentioned that not everybody would like this kind of music. They performed six parts with the title "From Silence" with a total time of almost one hour long. The music was all very mellow and had no drum beats on it. Most of it was instrumental and had certainly elements which reminded me of Iona. I also mentioned if you would remove the Uillian Pipes and Whistles out of the music you also would remove the Iona sound out of the music. I called a lot of the music performed New Age and compared it to the Austrian multi instrumentalist Gandalf. "From Silence" was recorded in binaural stereo sound. Which will reveal full surround sound and was designed for headphones listening. This technique involves sampling normal human hearing and rendering that information into two channels of stereo. I ended my review with an extra tip that you should hear the album with your eyes closed. Lying on a bench and a glass of wine in your hand. But this you must certainly not do with the DVD version of the same album. Otherwise you can not see the two musicians performing the same relaxing music. Also the movements of Dalls Simpson would be missed. He was the man behind the whole binaural recording project. He explained it all during two interviews which are included as special feartures on this DVD. They also included interviews with the performing artists. Talking about the project and the past and future of their band. The main course of this DVD, the whole performance of "From Silence", was filmed with two camera's. But this performance looks as if we are watching a home video made by a couple of fans. The low budget could have been the reason. Also the playing of the musicians on their instruments look a little bit dull. Only Troy's emotions on his face and the footage of the Cathedral gave the whole performance a reason to watch. Fortunately did it not effect the music. The sound is very good and the same as on the CD. My verdict of this DVD is the same as with the CD. Not everybody might enjoy this new age kind of music. A lot of Iona fans will certainly like watching their heroes one hour long. Maybe the whole product looked not as a real professional DVD. But you can still sit on a bench and drink a glass of wine and enjoy the relaxing music. But don't close your eyes!
