Steve Hillage first came to prominence as a member of the multi-national rock band Gong. Steve appeared on successful albums such as Angels Egg, You and his final album with the band Shamal. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled Fish Rising. This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however, Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System Seven.

In 1976 Steve recorded the album L" with Todd Rundgren producing. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the Steve Hillage Band which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976. Following the live debut the band played numerous live concerts including a concert in Germany in early 1977 for German television. This performance is now captured on this DVD.

The track listing of this fabulous performance from the first Steve Hillage band includes: Salmon Song, Hurdy Gurdy Glissando, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Solar Musick Suite, Lunar Musick Suite, It`s All Too Much, (Lunar Musick Suite)/ It's All Too Much II, Aftaglid Pt. I, Elecktrick Gypsies, Not Fade Away.

The DVD also includes an exclusive interview filmed at Steve and Miquette's studio in London in January 2007 where Steve and Miquette discuss the Steve Hillage Band, the German concert and also the recording of the albums Fish Rising, ‘L' and Motivation Radio.

Here's a real treat for all the Hillage fans: a live gig filmed at Otto-Hahn-Schule, Berlin, in 1977. Most of this show was broadcasted at the time on the German television, but now the whole gig is included! The sound quality is very good. The picture quality is also excellent for a seventies footage, after all. The band is on fire, and you'll for sure enjoy this if you're into Steve's music. For me, the guy is absolutely on the top of my favourite guitar players list, and his music is psychedelic enough and skilful. The first thousand copies of this DVD also includes the gig as an original mono mix bonus CD, which is nice. The gig begins with the superb Fish Rising" from Steve's first solo album. The going is very tight all the way from the beginning, and MiniMoog really gets it. This version works really well played by two guitar players and Hillage smiles looking very happy. Hurdy Gurdy Glissando" from the album L starts off peacefully with glissando guitar, synthesiser and a bell. The track gets more hypnotic and we get to hear some really great soloing and amazing stuff. I must also especially mention the great bass playing of Colin Bass! Then we get a really great cover version of the Donovan song Hurdy Gurdy Man". The vocal microphones are opened just a bit too late… After this Steve presents the band. The more peaceful and beautiful Solor Musick Suite" from Fish Rising comes next. There are some wild synth and guitar solos towards the end. Then comes the track Lunar Musick Suite" from the new" L album released in 1977 and it has a primitive sequencer going on. I think this is a bit weaker material, but still a fine track… Meditation of the Dragon" is a short atmospheric track after which comes the George Harrison cover It's All too Much" that was also released as a single. Steve breaks a string in the beginning which is the reason why this was omitted from the original broadcast. A professional takes care of the problem very swiftly and also this track works very well. After the silly beginning Afterglid (Part I)" is a real space jam! Electrick Gypsies" continues directly from the previous track. Also these two tracks were not included on the original broadcast and are now seen for the first time. Not Fade Away (Glid Forever)" begins with a real glissando bliss and then some funny and spacey Gong styled stuff follows.

Germany -77 really is a must-have for all the Steve Hillage fans and an excellent showcase for what the band was alike live in 1977. As an extra feature the DVD includes a fresh and very interesting interview with Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy where they mostly do some retrospection. There are also some mentions about the times before Gong. The cover of the DVD is pretty simple on the outside, but you can find for example the original gig poster and some paper cuttings from the inside and the insert includes a 70's Steve Hillage biography. A very nice package!!

Steve Hillage

Active Decade: '70s
Born: Aug 02, 1951 in England
Genre: Rock
Styles: Prog-Rock, Space Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock

A guitarist who first found fame in the progressive rock era only to later resurface as an ambient techno cult hero, Steve Hillage was born August 2, 1951. In 1967 he co-founded the group Uriel with bassist Mont Campbell, organist Dave Stewart, and drummer Clive Brooks; the unit subsequently continued on as the trio Egg upon Hillage's 1968 departure for university. He did not return to music for another three years, reuniting with Stewart in 1971 in Khan, which recorded the 1972 prog rock effort Space Shanty before soon splitting.
After touring in support of Kevin Ayers, Hillage joined Gong, winning acclaim for his echo- and delay-heavy brand of guitar work over the course of the group's 1972-1975 "Radio Gnome Invisible" trilogy (consisting of the LPs Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg, and You). In 1975 Hillage went solo with the album Fish Rising, the first fruits of a longstanding writing partnership with keyboardist Miquette Giraudy. He next traveled to New York to cut 1976's L, produced by Todd Rundgren and featuring guest appearances from Utopia as well as jazz great Don Cherry.
At the peak of the punk era, Hillage's work was by no means fashionable, but he pressed on regardless; in 1977 he issued Motivation Radio, an album recorded with Malcolm Cecil (the creator of an influential early electronic project, the studio-synthesizer T.O.N.T.O.). He subsequently issued 1978's Green, 1979's Rainbow Dome Musick (an early ambient outing), and Open, and 1983's For to Next/And Not Or, but as interest in his music continued to dwindle, Hillage turned to production, helming records for the likes of Robyn Hitchcock and Simple Minds.
By the close of the 1980s, Hillage had largely disappeared from music; however, in 1989 he was visiting the ambient room of a local club when, much to his surprise, his own Rainbow Dome Musick began to play. He introduced himself to the DJ, one Alex Paterson, and soon Hillage was working with Paterson's seminal group the Orb; out of their collaboration grew a new Hillage-Giraudy project, System 7, a dance collective also comprised of club luminaries including Paterson and fellow DJ Paul Oakenfold.
After debuting with an eponymously titled 1991 LP, System 7 plunged completely into blissed-out ambient sound on 1993's 777, which reached the Top 40 on the U.K. album charts. Released in 1994, Point 3 appeared in two different versions: the first, The Fire Album, offered heavy beats and rhythms, while The Water Album featured drumless mixes of the same music. With 1996's Power of Seven, System 7 turned to Detroit techno, recruiting the services of mixers Carl Craig and Derrick May. The group continued to release studio albums for many years to follow, including Golden Section (1997), Seventh Wave (2001), Encantado (2004), and Phoenix (2008). Hillage also reunited with Gong on the album 2032, released in September of 2009.
