Joe McPhee, tenor and soprano saxophones; Paul Hession, drum set.
Cover design by Paul Hession and Geoff Clout.
This duo recording release coincides with the 50th birthday of British drummer Paul Hession and documents part of a mini tour he undertook with US saxophonist Joe McPhee in January 2003. Paul Hession was born in Leeds in 1956 and since the late 70's has played with many of the major figures on the free music scene. He has a particular liking for the direct two-way exchange of a reeds and drums duo.
Joe McPhee emerged on the creative jazz and new music scene in the late 60's and is recognised as a key figure in the music. The Swiss entrepreneur Werner X. Uehlinger formed the record label Hat Hut because he thought that McPhee was under exposed and the first release, 'Black Magic Man', was a recording of his from 1970. Time Out New York said of him... "His magical take on avant-garde sax remains one of the wonders of the scene. He still has one of the most beautiful tones on the planet, even when he's reaching for jazz's outer limits." |
