Lionel Hampton made a significant contribution to the evolution of jazz - and most of the big names from the world of jazz were, at some time or another, a member of one of the outfits led by him. He played with them all - from Louis Armstrong to Charles Mingus, from Billie Holiday to Frank Sinatra - and most of the names in between. His instrument, the vibraphone, was an unlikely instrument for a jazz great but Hampton still became one of the most popular artists of his day because of his natural enthusiasm, immense musicality and giant charisma. |
