This release contains Coleman Hawkins and Henry “Red” Allen’s complete 1950s studio recordings, including three rarely heard complete original albums plus their only two tunes from the LP of various artists, "The Sound of Jazz".

Prior to the March 21, 1957 session, Hawkins and Allen’s previous recording together had been in 1934, and no other collaborations between the two musicians are known to exist after 1958. Therefore, these 1957-58 encounters were – in addition to being a reunion between two old friends – a great opportunity to pair two outstanding jazz personalities together, each of whom had plenty to say.

Total time: 61:20 + 68:40 min.

All tracks from CD 1, originally issued as Red Allen "Ride, Red, Ride in Hi-Fi" (RCA Victor LPM-1508).

CD 2, tracks #1-7 issued as Coleman Hawkins & Red Allen "Warhorses" (Jass 10, previously issued on the Soundcraft label as "Dixieland Jamfest").

CD 2, tracks #8-14 issued as Coleman Hawkins & Red Allen "High Standards" (Jass 11, previously issued on the Soundcraft label as "Sweet Moods of Jazz").

CD 2, tracks #15-16 taken from the album "The Sound of Jazz" (Columbia JCD-8040).

"This 1957 LP was one of trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen's finest hours. He leads a potentially unruly group of all-stars (which includes Coleman Hawkins on tenor, clarinetist Buster Bailey and trombonist J.C. Higginbotham) through a variety of heated standards. The highpoints are Red's abstract solo on "I Cover the Waterfront," the catchy "Algiers Bounce" and the hot ensembles of the Dixielandish "Love Is Just Around the Corner."

"Considering the outstanding lineup of players (tenor-great Coleman Hawkins, trumpeter Red Allen and trombonist J.C. Higginbotham among them), this should have been a great session. As it turned out (and is accurately stated in the LP's title), the seven tunes are all overdone standards, most of them from the repertoire of Dixieland bands, like "Bill Bailey," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Saints." In addition to that liability, there is less than 30 minutes of music on this LP."

"This impressive lineup (tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, trumpeter Red Allen and altoist Earl Warren, who for some reasons sticks here to clarinet) should have guaranteed a highly recommended LP but the very brief playing time (around 27 minutes) [...] makes this set a bit of a disappointment."
