One name is to be written large in the annals of stride-style mastery - that of Earl Hines. He took the stride style, tamed it completely and then wrenched it into the modern era with a range of innovative techniques - producing clear high notes from the right hand and complex syncopated rhythms from the left. He performed and recorded with most of the greatest artists of the century, and was equally at home on stage and in the studio, playing solo, in small ensembles and with large orchestras.
