In the 1950s the important mainstream guitarist Barney Kessel bridged the lines between swing, bebop, cool jazz and hardbop. He was a member of the Oscar Peterson Trio in 1952 and made a lot of recordings for Contemporary in 1952. Virtuosity, improvisatory ingenuity, deft arrangements, a good hand at the choice of his musicians and a fine contrast - Kessel used to play hot and driving, but he loved to put his style into the cool, relaxed West Coast Sound - make these records a pleasure without alloy. |
