Jazz / Big Band, Trad Jazz
Mabel Lee Performer Ray Ellington Vocals, Arranger Ray Martin Director Ray Nance Vocals
Perhaps best known as the “house" band on the infamous Goon Shows in the 50's, the Ray Ellington Quartet were one of the most popular small bands in the UK during the late 40's and 50's. Our latest addition to the Essential Collection range covers the period from 1948 to 1955 with appropriately enough 55 Ellington classics! To kick things off we include an early hit with a sophisticated interpretation of the nursery rhyme The Three Bears, one of many which are included here. We also include an interesting session featuring renowned Duke Ellington sideman Ray Nance. An essential addition to the UK jazz section, Ray has had very little catalogue available...until now, and as the man himself was wont to say ... "That's ni-i-i-i-ce!!"
