An organizer and coordinator for the Newport Jazz Festival, jazz pianist George Wein has been performing for over six decades. Highlights from this original 1969 Atlantic album include "These Foolish Things," "Topsy" and "My Melancholy Baby."
Unlike the earlier editions of the Newport All-Stars, the 1969 group leaned much more heavily toward swing and elements of bop than to dixieland. In addition to pianist George Wein and cornetist Ruby Braff, the band heard on this Atlantic Lp includes vibraphonist Red Norvo, both Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel on guitars, bassist Larry Ridley and drummer Don Lamond. Highlights include "In A Little Spanish Town," "Ja-Da," "My Melancholy Baby," "Exactly Like You" and even the pop tune "Sunny"; Braff's passion alone makes this a worthy release. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
George Wein
Active Decades: '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s Born: Oct 03, 1925 in Boston, MA Genre: Jazz Styles: Dixieland, Swing, Classic Jazz, Mainstream Jazz, Standards
George Wein's main importance to jazz has been his work at organizing and booking festivals including Newport (which he helped found in 1954) and his own Storyville club in the 1950s. However, Wein has long been a fine Earl Hines-inspired pianist (and an occasional vocalist), quite comfortable in swing and Dixieland-oriented settings. On an irregular basis since the 1950s he has toured and recorded with his Newport All-Stars, which has included cornetist Ruby Braff, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, and tenorman Bud Freeman; later Scott Hamilton on tenor and cornetist Warren Vache. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
