AVID Entertainment's new jazz imprint AVID JAZZ welcomes one of the greatest star sidemen of the 1930's ...Harry James.
Harry found fame while performing with the Benny Goodman Band and went on to form his own big band achieving huge success from the 1930's to the 1950's. Our collection captures four classic albums released in the 1950's, "One Night Stand" recorded live at the Aragon Ballroom, the critically lauded "Jazz Session" , "Harry James in Hi Fi" and "More Harry James In Hi Fi". These releases signalled a return for Harry following a period of semi retirement and as you will hear his trumpet playing has retained all its old qualities of verve and brash excitement encouraged by playing alongside an orchestra full of fine soloists.
Indeed the great musicologist Gunther Schuller described James as " the most technically assured and prodigiously talented white trumpet player of the late Swing Era" Great praise indeed! listen and wonder!
If you are a fan of Harry James, this is likely a recording you'll want to find unless you own them already. Still, having all four of these original recordings -- One Night Stand, Harry James in Hi-Fi, Jazz Session, and More Harry James in Hi-Fi all together -- is a treat. Though well beyond his initial foray into big-band swing jazz, but not past his prime, James is here on two CDs that document live concert dates at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in October of 1952, in Hollywood during the winter of 1954 and 1955, and in July of 1955. There are also nine studio tracks tacked on to the end of the second disc. The recordings are full, rich and clean, and hard to deny as to their high quality.
