T.J. Johnson is a very popular performer at the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival. Normally fronting a Rythm 'n' Blues band singing and playing the piano, he is also a very enthusiastic traditional jazz musician. Here with specially formed "Bourbon Kick" he switches to drums and leads an exciting band containing some of the brightest young New Orleans style musicians in the UK. Three are from the increasingly popular "Richard Bennett Band", Richard himself on trumpet, brother Russell on banjo and dynamic teenage clarinettist Adrian Cox, and the band is completed by two other fine players Julian Bury on bass and Graham Hughes on trombone and sousaphone.
TJ's first CD for LAKE (LACD198) brought critical acclaim and hot on its heels coems this one. This features his current working band which includes Adrian Cox and Karl Hird on reeds, Jim Ydstie on bass and an exciting young Trombone player, Sky Murphy.
TJ Johnson
TJ started his musical career at the age of fifteen when he started playing honkytonk piano in a small bar in Manchester. After singing for a short time with local jazz bands he joined The Max Collie Rhythm Aces, with whom he toured internationally for three years. He has run The TJ Johnson Band for the last 10 years, playing jazz festivals and clubs all over Europe. He has recorded seven albums over the last 15 years, two with Max Collie and five with his own band. He also continues to play many gigs on piano as a freelance player. Formed The T.J.Johnson Band, playing in the styles of Ray Charles, BB King, Dr John, Big Joe Turner and Jimmy Witherspoon. Also put together a young New Orleans Band called Bourbon Kick. |
