The recording process presents a snapshot of the band at a given moment. What they did before or since becomes irrelevant. So here is a snap-shot of Colin Kingwell's band. For the third time we turned their regular jazz club room into a makeshift studio, trying to make the recording process as painless as possible. They leave the technicalities to me and I leave the music to them, offering suggestions only when necessary. The result is another example of their relaxed brand of jazz, playing an interesting set of tunes. It is not the "in your face', blast 'em out" type of band. It cooks away nicely and cohesively with the secure interplay of musicians who are used to working together. They understand dynamics and can put the pressure on or back it off as appropriate. On the day they delivered. - Paul Adams

Colin Kingwell's Jazz Bandits

Colin KingwellThe Jazz Bandits have been led by trombonist Colin Kingwell since 1956 and in the "Trad Boom" won awards playing in the classic style. Over the years, however, they have developed a purer New Orleans style and can boast of one, if not the best rhythm section anywhere. Drummer, Malc Murphy, is well known playing with many bands, including, of course, Ken Colyer''s Jazzmen from 1966-1971. Since then Malc has played under his own name and in numerous bands across Europe and in New Orleans. His unique style is much in demand, mixing the rhythms of Zutty Singleton, Baby Dodds, Joe Watkins, this reinforced by a great range of vocals. He joined the band in February 1991. Terry Knight is as legendary for his swinging and accurate Pops Foster type bass playing. Concerts with Louis Armstrong, recording and tours with George Lewis, Sammy Rimington, Kid Thomas and many other greats are few of his notable achievements. He joined the band in October 1987. Completing the rhythm section is Doug Kennedy, doubling in best tradition on tenor banjo and guitar. He is a musicians'' rhythm and, the relaxed and steady chord playing controlling exciting rhythms and proving the optimum link for the front line. Doug is the longest serving member, joining in March 1973. Dave Clennel on trumpet is noticeably a Red Allen man. He plays a very exciting lead plus a variety of vocals. He joined the band in January 1988. Powerhouse clarinet and alto sax player is Rod Chambers who led his own band, the Louisiana Joymakers, for a number of years. He is the latest member, joining in February 1994. Colin Kingwell has been described as having a "singing style" on trombone. In this early years he played tuba with Mick Mulligan''s Magnolia Jazzband then formed the Brent Valley Jazzband with Pat Halcox, before moving to the trombone chair in Steve Lane''s, Southern Stompers.
