I've spent twenty-two years recording and I can honestly say that working with the Savannahs is always one of the easiest and more enjoyable jobs I do. What makes them special? They let me (and trust me to) get on with my job, their "digs" at each other are based on years of working together and they function well as a team, they treat the music with respect, but don't take it too seriously, and they don't take themselves too seriously. They deliver the music honestly, with conviction and never lose sight of the fact that their audience is there to be entertained. The proof of their popularity is in their large following and healthy album sales. I once described them as one of the best bands within their chosen style. The Savannah Jazz Band
The Savannah Jazz Band must be one of the busiest and most popular bands playing solid, driving New Orleans style jazz in the U.K. They have been delighting fans from all over Europe, the U.S.A. and New Zealand since being formed in 1978 by the late Terry Mellor. They play to packed audiences every Thursday at the Station Tavern in Huddersfield, where they have been resident since 1978. In recent years they have become firm favourites at the 100 Club and the Barbican Centre in London, as well as appearing at jazz festivals at Buxon, Cliftonville, Blackpool, Keswick, Dumfries and the Isle of Bute. 1992 saw them touring Holland. |
