The Christie Brothers
To the first 7 tracks recording in 1953 and 1954 by the Bobby Mickleburgh Bobcats. The evidence presented by Esquire on these CDs demonstrates that the Mickleburgh band was every bit as good as its rivals. On this first volume we have the multi-talented Mickleburgh on trumpet excellently supported by Pete Hodge, trombone, Colin Thompson on clarinet and the late Ian Armit on piano. The quality of musicianship is high, and Mickleburgh leads strongly with an authority coupled with a Hackett-inspired lyricism. Then proceed to six tracks by Cy Laurie, beginning with the in-augural four sides by his earliest group, the Cy Laurie Four. Laurie's Dodds-inspired clarinet is partnered by the fine Les Jowett on trumpet, Ron Deane on guitar and, presumably making his recording debut, the tasteful piano of the late Fred Hunt. To these 1951 tracks is added a 1955 session of 2 released tracks which feature Laurie with Alan Elsdon, replacing the fine Al Fairweather. |
