Les Jowett's Jazz Seven The Second City Jazzmen The Merseysippi Jazzband Chris Barber's Washboard Wonders Chris Barber & His New Orleans Jazz Band
Les Jowett was a Yorkshireman who had his musical apprenticeship, like Kenny Baker, in the brass bands of Bradford and Hull. He moved around 1952 to Brighton where he formed hs own group, Les Jowett Seven, which the reliable ears of Krahmer and Newbrook selected for a session of 4 tracks recorded in 1957. The Second City Jazzmen used a front line of trumpet, trombone and two reeds, and it is in the intelligent use of Jim Hyde and Dave Lee for which they are most likely to be remembered. In their Esquire recording session of 1958 they jump merrily from Trad rabble rousers like Doctor Jazz and The Girls Go Crazy to Wilbur de Paris' The Martinique to originals and mainstream standards. Perhaps the highspot of their session is the obviously heartfelt Blues For Madge. The Bob Scobey/Lu Watters-styled Merseysippi Jazz Band already has the majority of its Esquire material issued on Lake LACD85. Here Lake has included 3 1954 tracks which have slipped through the net. We end this fascinating collection with 4 tracks from the very early, pre-Ken Colyer, pre-Pat Halcox Chris Barber Band. From the same source as the Crane River Eh La Bas on Volume 2 come two sides recorded live at the NFJO Jazz Band at Hammersmith Palais in 1951. |
