Jazz
Recorded: 1962
Ron Weatherburn (pn) Sandy Sanders (dm (tracks 1-11 except 2)) Brian White (cl (tracks 5 & 11)) Ken Sims (cn (tracks 5 & 11)
Ron started out with Eric Silk's band, but came to prominence in Kenny Ball's Jazzmen during its hit making period of the early 1960s. Like so many band pianists he had his one feature during the show and yet he was perfectly capable of making solo albums. This collection of rare tracks amply demonstrates his rare talent.
Ron Weatherburn
Ron Weatherburn is a classic example of an unsung hero of British Jazz. He was born in 1934 in Essex, started playing the piano at the age of six and the British Jazz public became aware of him when he joined Eric Silk''s band. He was with the Silk band from 1955 to 1958. In early 1958 he joined Cy Laurie with whom he recorded four tracks for Parlophone. He spent some time in Germany with Eggy Ley and just two recordings are known to exit from that period. Also in Germany he co-led a band with clarinettist, Mac White. It was a member of Kenny Ball''s Jazzmen that he came before a wider audience. He joined the band in 1960, as replacement for Colin Bates, and stayed with the band for over ten years. He was with Kenny throughout the band''s chart-topping period. When he left Kenny''s band he freelanced both as a soloist and as a band member. There were gigs with Monty Sunshine, The Original Eastside Stompers and with Brian White''s Magnolia Band. If he "joined" a band it was Ken Sims Dixie Kings which took him from the late 1980s into the 1990s. In May 1995 he went to Canada with Ken Sims to appear at a jazz festival and he passed away in his sleep the night he arrived. |
