Why, you may well ask, is this CD entitled 'Jubilee Stomp' when that fine tune by Duke Ellington is nowhere to be found upon it? The answer, dear reader, lies in the recording date, for this CD was cut on Sunday, 2nd June, 2002 upon the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. And what better day to record a jazz album, for was not her Majesty (then Princess Elizabeth) present at the epochal NFJO Traditional Jazz concert at have attended a jazz concert? Amaze your friends by quoting from this wealth of in-depth and meaningful historical background, much of it made up on the spot by yours truly. - Mike Durham

West Jesmond Rhythm Kings

West Jesmond Rhythm Kings are based in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the far North-East of England. Founded in 1985 by trumpeter Mike Durham, their aim is to recreate the classic small-band jazz of the 1920s, and especially to revive the more neglected numbers from the golden era. Though there is no written music, the band do employ "head arrangements", playing verses as well as choruses and employing plenty of harmonized breaks, modulations, intros and codas to make the tunes more interesting for the listener...but with plenty of space left for solos and collective improvisation.

Keith Nichols

Keith Nichols born Ilford, Essex 13 February 1945, piano/trombone/reeds/tuba/vibes/vocals/arranger. He is considered to be one of the foremost authorities on classic jazz and Ragtime, specialising in all older jazz piano styles, including Scott Joplin, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington. Keith took his first music lessons at five years old, both on piano and accordion, becoming Great Britain Junior Champion on that instrument in 1960. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music, he turned professional, and toured for seven years with the jazz comedy band the Levity Lancers in which he played piano, trombone and tuba. From the early seventies, he has given regular Ragtime concerts at London''s South Bank, both as soloist and with small groups. He first visited the U.S.A. in 1976, as a member of Richard Sudhalter''s New Paul Whiteman Orchestra, appearing in Philadelphia and New York''s Carnegie Hall. Recording credits include three solo albums for EMI, plus a host of others for Decca, including one with Bing Crosby. Since the mid-80s, he has been featured on more than twenty albums for the American “Stomp-off” label, both as bandleader and sideman. In 1977, he formed the Midnite Follies Orchestra with arrangerAlan Cohen, featuring the Harlem-based music of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, and has written many arrangements and transcriptions in the 1920s and 30s style, notably for the New York Jazz Repertory Company, the Smithsonian Institute Masterworks series, and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. Currently, he is freelance, performing all over the UK, Europe and America. His current concert projects include tributes to Fats Waller, Bix Beiderbecke, plus an ambitious chronological show, Jazz Classics Revisited. In 1990, he was invited by musical director Bob Wilber to play the piano part of Hoagy Carmichael on the soundtrack of the feature film, Bix recorded in Rome. Keith Nichols continues to perform and record prolifically, as well as lecturing on jazz history at The Royal Academy of Music. He has recreated the music of Fletcher Henderson on CD, and recently performed the music of Benny Goodman''s 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert with the Royal Academy Big Band. Latest tours include France, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland and Egypt.
