The original WAR OF THE ROSES released on Esquire was a 12" LP with half the tracks by the Yorkshire Jazz Band and half by Eric Batty's Jazz Aces. In 1987 Esquire issued King Tuba (ESQ S338) which featured all the Yorkshire Jazz Band track recorded for Esquire. When planning this release we were faced with a dilemma: on its own the YJB sides would have made an LP lenght CD; if we kept the WAR OF THE ROSES concept we would have had to make two CDs. There were also the four tracks by Dizzy Burton's Jazz Aces to consider. The 1987 reissue had proved a good seller for Esquire and indicated a nostalgic following for the YJB.

Yorkshire Jazz Band

Bob Barclay, leader of The Yorkshire Jazz Band, a veteran of the northern jazz scene, was born in Greenock, Scotland in July 1911, the son of a Scottish mother and West Indian feather. He died, at the age of 75, on 15th February 1987, as a result of a stroke. One of a number which he had suffered over a few years. The personnel of the band changed several times over the years, featuring such well known local figures as Alan Cooper, Geoff Sowden, Eddie O''Donnell and Dickie Hawdon. Guests included Freddie Randall, Beryl Bryden and George Melly. But whatever the personnel, guided by Bob''s inspired leadership, the various bands always managed to produce a distinctive and original sound, which was instantly recognisable. Always popular in the London area, the band toured extensively visiting places like Sheffield, Nottingham, Birmingham, Newcastle and Manchester. - John Wilson
