The "Ex Con" single features the most deceptively upbeat moment from Smog's 1997 album, Red Apple Falls. The folky new-wave gem, in which singer/songwriter Bill Callahan laments that he feels like a "robot by the river," leads off this four song EP. Each following songs reflects a different aspect of Smog's sound; "Little Girl Shoes" is stark and acoustic musically, but the lyrics are painfully elaborate: "Does the girl imitate the woman/Or the woman imitate the girl?" Callahan asks, reminiscent of "All Your Women Things" from The Doctor Came at Dawn. "Just Like Napoleon" features sludgy, falling-down guitars, and sounds a little like a cleaner version of Julius Caesar. Finally, "Duckpond Blues" is a beautiful instrumental version of Red Apple Falls' title track, resplendent with weepy pedal steel and piano. The EP's diversity acts as a nice complement to Red Apple Falls' flowing folkiness, displaying Callahan's range as a songwriter. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
