"In all stages of jazz development, the clarinet has been a symbol of interrelation. The function of the clarinet in the old New Orleans counterpoint, filling in the space between the contrasting trumpet and trombone, and entwining them like ivy, is characteristic for its position. Not coincidentally did the clarinet have its greatest period during the Swing-era, when jazz and popular music were largely identical."(Joachim E. Berendt, The Jazz Book).

The period, name and style that this statement brings to mind, is that of Benny Goodman. And when one thinks of Goodman, the name of Lionel Hampton immediately follows. In the thirties, the "King of Swing" and "Hamp" laid the basis for one of the most successful instrumental combinations in jazz history: that of the clarinet and the vibraphone. The enduring allure of this combination is proven by the enormous success of clarinetist Bernard Berkhout and vibraphonist Frits Landesbergen. After their first meeting in February 1986 - in the popular Pim Jacobs television programme "Music Hall" - they founded their own band, with drummer Bob Dekker, guitarist Jeroen Koning and bassist Frans Bouwmeester. The Swingmates, who initially concentrated on Goodman classics, quickly grew from being Holland's most promising jazz group (North Sea Jazz Festival 1987) into one of Europe's most sought-after jazz formations. Their performances were given international recognition by many colleagues including Eddie Daniels, Buddy de Franco and Milt Jackson.

Audiences were thrilled in the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, and the Low countries alike (North Sea Jazz Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Montreux Jazz festival and over a hundred wore ^.In addition, their first CD on Polygram was crooned with the highest distinction in the Dutch record industry, the "Edison", which is the equivalent of the Grammy Award, the Grand Prix du Disque, and the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis. Although Berkhout and Landesbergen have already worked on some 30 records, this is the long awaited second CD of the Swingmates. What makes this album especially interesting is that their musical development has obviously been as rapid as their international success. Despite the title "Airmail Special", it is definitely not only "Goodmanitis" that one hears. A very personal style of their own has evolved, which shows great artistry of both instruments and repertoire.

"Fewer notes, more music" could be the theme of this evolution. Having maintained the original enthusiasm and sparkling energy, they have developed a more balanced and, most of all, a more expressive kind of music. Berkhout now has an almost "Getz-like" expressive whisper in his tone which creates room for a lyricism previously unheard of on the clarinet. With the cooperation of producer Ruud Jacobs, this album has become a harmonious entity. The pieces form the chapters in a story that takes us from one mood to the other. Thus the "happy" Goodman swing has grown into a kind of jazz that occupies a place of its own and that will certainly have its impact on the music of the nineties. With this album, the Swingmates present swing-music of the highest international standard, that deserves to be heard in all corners of the world.
