Songwriting may start with a hummed phrase or a few notes picked out on the piano. Or it can be with one of those fleeting ideas with which you try to tackle, accept or understand the world around you. A few of these minor inspirations stay with you and refuse to leave your mind until through you they are finally born as freshly made songs – and that is a purely joyful happening.
Basically the songs have their origins in my own experiences, but they also reflect my views of the joy, fun, pain, courage, anxiety, hope and curiosity that we all feel at certain times.
It's been a miracle for me to discover how certain words and phrases that have crossed my mind have somehow developed into sixteen new songs, which have now become my third self written cd. Of course, even miracles don't happen without work and if I hadn't spent so much time at my piano or my desk cudgelling my brains over forms, rhythms, melodic lines, rhyme schemes and so on, the songs wouldn't be here today

I've also been blessed with the bonus miracle of being able to record these new creations in my favourite setting with such wonderfully talented and lyrical musicians as Berend van den Berg and Ruud Ouwehand. To me they represent everything I love about this kind of music. And Miriam Kroeze's cello just had to be there to enhance the melancholy feeling of Don't Cry Baby.
As always I owe a great deal to the constructive criticism of friend and producer Chris Ellis with his vast knowledge of songs (on the lyrics) and Berend van den Berg with his harmonic expertise (on the music). And as always, once I'd presented the songs to them I've defended the little kids against such strictures as any good mother should do but I've also taken them to heart.

I've spent so much time living with these songs on my own. Now they're ready for the big world. Here they are, a pocketful of samba's, bossa nova's, jazzballads, novelty songs, popballads and blues. Right from my heart.

A top jazz singer from Holland, Soesja Citroen has a high wistful voice, a cool but emotional style, and she is expert at placing notes in the perfect spots. Although in the past she recorded tribute albums to Thelonious Monk and Fred Astaire, on Don't Cry Baby she contributed all 16 selections, both the words and the music. The lyrics are in English and she sings without any real accent. The words are intelligent and deal with such subject matter as melancholy love affairs, the joy of early jazz, a remembrance of a drizzly day, the infectious thrill of dancing to a samba, and a humorous look at plastic surgery. With proper exposure, a few of these songs could become standards in the future, so singers looking for fresh material are particularly advised to explore this ballad-oriented collection. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Soesja Citroen

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Hard Bop, Standards, Vocal Jazz

Although not well known in the U.S., Soesja Citroen is among Holland's top jazz singers and has commanded a lot of respect in European jazz circles. Her influences include Abbey Lincoln, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, among others, and she is an expressive interpreter of lyrics as well as a talented composer/lyricist. Though Dutch is her native language, Citroen's English is excellent--and she sings with only a slight trace of a Dutch accent. The vocalist was born and raised in the Hague, and as a young adult, she moved to Amsterdam to further her education and earned a masters degree in social psychology. Citroen was 32 when, in 1980, she recorded her debut album, To Build--and she went on to provide seven more albums in the 1980s, recording for Turning Point, Varagram and Timeless. It was in 1983 that she recorded the Turning Point release Soesja Citroen Sings Thelonious Monk, which received rave reviews from European jazz critics and is considered one of her best albums. Another conceptual offering that enjoyed high marks from European critics was 1987's Soesja Citroen sings Fred Astaire on Varagram. Citroen was equally busy in the 1990s, when she recorded for Varajazz and Challenge and often worked with the well respected British producer Chris Ellis.
