Their innate grasp of the band as one family is evident on Squeeze, Squeeze, a CD named in fact for what Vega’s son Aaron says to his dad at cross lights: "squeeze, squeeze, Dad!"
The CD begins with "Black Nile" by Wayne Shorter allowing the band to groove immediately and Vega to shine on a burning solo. "Smile You're in Beirut" is one of the four original tunes on the disc from Vega and features a funky baseline with dramatic horn overplay. The spiritual "Contemplation" is the other composition borrowed from a legend, this time McCoy Tyner. Vega's bandmate and friend, Bobby Porcelli, offers his swinging tune "Ne Quitez Pas" to the band. Vega's funk-laden title track follows before Porcelli comes back with "Both", a hot tune built on Cole Porter's "Night and Day". Vega plays his friend Marty Sheller’s original "Salazar", an ode to his friendship and influence. The evocative "Sky" is another Vega tune and spotlights the tight and light tone Vega achieves so well. "Crescent Mood" by bassist Gregg August is elegant and lush. Vega wrote more tunes for this disc than for any of his previous CDs and closes with his final composition, “La Tercera", a track that sounds like an instant classic.
While Vega claims to be intimidated by the tradition of great jazz composition, Squeeze, Squeeze finds him writing more and departing a bit from his rearrangement of jazz standards into a Latin framework. With his 4th leader CD, Vega continues evolving toward fuller musical self-expression.
Ray Vega's fourth album not only confirms his status as one of the leading afro-cuban trumpeters of his generation, but also shows an admirable willingness not to be stuck in one subgenre of jazz forever. Squeeze, Squeeze focuses mostly on band originals, composed not only by Vega but also by bassist Gregg August, whose "Crescent Mood" has an enjoyably retro feel that recalls the smooth, fusiony jazz of the CTI Records crowd, and alto saxophonist Bobby Porcelli, whose post-bop ballad "Both" is one of the album's highlights. The album has a few standard afro-cuban jazz pieces, most notably the closing "La Tercera," the rollicking title track, and a bracing take on Wayne Shorter's "Black Nile." However, the majority of the album explores a strong bop influence, as on Vega's own "Smile, You're in Beirut" and an extended take on McCoy Tyner's "Contemplation," which features an outstanding, Dizzy Gillespie-style solo from Vega. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

At the age of 12, when Ray Vega saw Machito & His Orchestra play in Central Park, the South Bronx native decided he was destined to play the saxophone. Enrolled in his school's music program, Vega received the bad news that the school was out of saxophones, so he reluctantly switched to trumpet. A year later he was being taught by Down Beat poll winner Jerry Gonzales, an experience that changed Vega's opinion of the instrument forever. Studying the trumpet throughout his high-school years gave Vega the chops to land gigs in the bands backing Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, Paul Simon, and Tito Puente. On his own he refined his trumpet, composition, and percussion skills and made his solo debut in 1996 with his self-titled album for the Concord label. He recorded Boperation for the label in 1999 but switched to Palmetto for his 2002 release, Pa'Lante. After serving a year as artist-in-residence for the Cityfolk program in Dayton, OH, Vega released his second Palmetto album, Squeeze Squeeze, in 2004. Vega also serves as a member of the Bronx Council of the Arts.
