Peter Bernstein Guitar
Thelonious Monk Composer

Born September 3rd, 1967 in New York City, guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time, he has participated in over one hundred recordings and numerous festivals, concert and club performances with musicians of all generations. As a leader, Peter has made five recordings for the Criss Cross Jazz label, one for the Japanese Venus Label, and one performance DVD for Mel Bay Records.

While a student at The New School, Peter met the legendary guitarist Jim Hall, who asked him to participate in his Invitational Concert as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival. The event featured such guitarists as John Scofield and Pat Metheny and was released as a CD by Music Masters. Hall once noted that Peter: ...has paid attention to the past as well as the future. He is the most impressive young guitarist I've heard. He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste.

Peter has also played with legendary jazz musicians including Lou Donaldson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy Cobb, Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Nicholas Payton, David Fathead Newman, Eric Alexander, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, Bill Charlap, Larry Goldings and Bill Stewart, to name a few. He has performed in North America, Europe and Asia, while making numerous television
appearances.

He has been on the faculty at Julliard School, NYU and The New School, and has taught workshops at Berklee College of Music, North Texas State University, and the Jazz Conservatory in Amsterdam.

Peter has been fortunate to gain the respect of his peers and mentors. He has been recognized in both the readers and critics polls in Downbeat Magazine for the past five years. He continues to hone his style through writing and performing and has developed a distinctive and unforgettable guitar voice that is all his own.

Monk, Peter Bernstein's seventh album, is also his first in four and a half years, following Stranger in Paradise, which was released in Japan. It's being issued by the newly reactivated Xanadu label, which has come back into existence mainly to reissue previous albums, and this one, although a current recording, also has the air of a retrospective. As its title suggests, it's a tribute to Thelonious Monk, employing all Monk compositions. The tribute album is a typical strategy to boost sales in jazz, of course, but the twist here is that Bernstein is a guitarist while Monk was a pianist, and in this case the only additional musicians are bassist Doug Weiss and drummer Bill Stewart. A pianoless trio playing Monk tunes obviously requires some adjustments, and in some cases Bernstein has effected approximations of Monk's themes rather than strict transpositions. Some notes may be harder to get to quickly enough on the guitar, and then the notes decay faster, as well. One curious effect of the changed instrumentation is that Monk's music actually sounds less unusual on the guitar than it does on the piano. Even when, as on "Work," Bernstein takes off into some odd soloing, somehow the guitar makes the music sound more conventional. Bernstein is at his most impressive when he only uses Monk for a template and, especially, when he dispenses with the rhythm section, as he does on "Monk's Mood" and "Ruby, My Dear," not to mention on "Reflections," in which, through the magic of overdubbing, he accompanies himself. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
