Steve Davis

Steve Davis is widely regarded as one of today's leading improvisors on the trombone. His lyrical, hard-swinging style first gained him broad recognition during the 1990's while working with the bands of jazz legends Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea's acclaimed sextet Origin and the renowned cooperative sextet, One For All.

Born in Worcester, MA in 1967, Steve was raised in Binghamton, NY and graduated in 1989 from The Hartt School's Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz (University of Hartford). It was Mc Lean's guidence and recommendation that helped Davis land his first major gig with Art Blakey in NYC in Dec 1989. Steve returned to Hartford in 1992 to join Mc Lean's sextet and begin teaching alongside his mentor at both the Hartt School and Artist's Collective. Davis has resided in Hartford ever since.

In May 2006, Davis presents his 9th CD as a leader, "Update" (Criss Cross) which features the stellar line-up of Peter Bernstein, Anthony Wonsey, Nat Reeves, Joe Farnsworth and special guest Roy Hargrove.

Lately, Steve has been leading his own bands with more frequency including an all-star quintet featuring Steve Nelson, Larry Willis, Nat Reeves and Joe Farnsworth. Davis has also formed a new quartet/quintet featuring rising stars David Bryant (piano), Dezron Douglas (bass) and renowned drummer, Eric McPherson. On occasion, the band is augmented by exciting, frontline-mates Mike DiRubbo - alto sax and/or Ray Mc Morrin - tenor sax, Josh Evans - trumpet.

Steve also continues to perform and record with the well-known, collective unit One For All (feat. Eric Alexander, Jim Rotondi, David Hazeltine, Peter Washington, Nat Reeves or David Williams and Joe Farnsworth). The band has recorded 11 CD's since 1997 for Sharp Nine, Criss Cross and Venus/Japan. Both their recordings and live performances have garnered rave reviews. In 2006, Second Floor Music will be publishing One For All sextet charts in two sets, as recorded on the group's first two CD's, "Too Soon To Tell" (1997) and "Optimism" (1998) for Sharp Nine Records.

Ever in-demand as a sideman, Davis is featured on over seventy recordings and has worked in recent years with a broad range of jazz icons including Horace Silver, Cecil Payne, Larry Willis, Freddie Hubbard (w/ New Jazz Composers Octet), The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band/Sextet, Slide Hampton`s World of Trombones, Wynton Marsalis (w/ Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) and Steve Turre's One 4 J.

Steve has also worked with a variety of his peers over the years including Claudia Acuna, Eric Alexander, Abraham Burton, Avishai Cohen, Mike DiRubbo, Dena DeRose, John Farnsworth, Jimmy Greene, Roy Hargrove, Stefon Harris, Nicholas Payton and Michael Weiss.

Davis continues to lead an active teaching career at the Hartt School`s Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz (University of Hartford) where he has been on faculty since 1991 and now teaches exclusively.

Steve also continues his long-time affiliation with the Artist`s Collective (founded by Jackie and Dollie McLean) in Hartford, CT where he makes his home (in West Hartford) with his wife, pianist Mary DiPaola-Davis and children Tony and Angie.

Mike DiRubbo

Combining an extensive knowledge of the jazz tradition and a highly individualistic approach to performance, Mike DiRubbo has taken his place in the elite of New York City's straight-ahead jazz musicians. His alto saxophone style reflects the influence of two of the giants of the instrument, Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean (DiRubbo's former teacher and mentor), along with an attraction to the sound of tenor saxophonists like Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane.

A native of New Haven, Connecticut, DiRubbo was born on July 25th 1970. He began clarinet studies at age nine, and took up the alto a few years later. While attending Notre Dame High School, his interest in jazz was spurred by an opportunity to play with the Mitchell-Ruff duo during a concert at Woolsey Hall in New Haven.

After receiving a scholarship to the prestigious Hartt School of Music (now the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz), DiRubbo studied under McLean, combining his penchant for learning by ear with formal training in African-American music. Throughout the Hartt years he frequently led groups in local clubs, appeared in the company of visiting New York musicians like trumpeter Eddie Henderson, and played bread and butter jobs in Latin bands. A short time after graduation, DiRubbo began a fruitful, long-term association with another Hartt alumnus, Steve Davis. In addition to regular gigs in the trombonist's bands, he played on Davis' first disc, The Jaunt (Criss Cross), and they formed an impressive alto/trombone front line on DiRubbo's inaugural date as a leader, From The Inside Out, released in 1999 for the Sharp Nine imprint.

A call from drummer Joe Farnsworth led to frequent work at Augie's, a New York watering hole that served as an incubator of promising young talent. In this hothouse atmosphere DiRubbo learned to hold his own in the company of emerging stars, such as tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, trumpeter Jim Rotondi, and guitarist Peter Bernstein plus veterans like pianist Harold Mabern and baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne. A few years later he moved to Brooklyn, New York, and became a member of pianist Michael Weiss' highly regarded sextet. Now a resident of the Bronx, he can be found in the front lines of Steve Davis' Quintet, David Hazeltine's Quartet, Jim Rotondi's Quintet, "Killer" Ray Appleton's Sextet, and with the group, "One For All". DiRubbo has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and in Israel and his quartet regularly appears in various New York City clubs and jazz festivals. In addition, DiRubbo has recorded as a sideman on 8 compact discs for the Criss Cross, Fresh Sounds, Knitting Factory, and Double Time labels.

Continuing the circle of knowledge, DiRubbo has been teaching privately for the past 17 years and has been a resident artist at the Litchfield Jazz Camp since it's inauguration in 1997. Most recently he has taught at William Patterson University's jazz program, at SUNY Purchase, and is a saxophone instructor at the New School in NYC.

From this varied activity, DiRubbo has evolved into a significant soloist, composer, and bandleader. Evidence of this progress is abundant on his two recordings for Criss Cross as a leader, Keep Steppin', and Human Spirit. DiRubbo's latest CD, "New York Accent", on the Cellar Live label, has received much critical acclaim and was in the top 50 of the Jazz Week chart for 10 weeks. Russ Musto of All About Jazz NY writes, "On this live date, leading a quartet - with an incendiary rhythm section of veteran pianist Harold Mabern and the indomitable bass and drum team of Dwayne Burno and Tony Reedus - through a swinging set at The Kitano, the altoist proves that he has few peers on his instrument in this idiom."

Larry Willis

Lawrence Elliott Willis (born December 20, 1940 in New York, NY) is an American jazz pianist and composer. He has performed in a wide range of styles, including jazz fusion rock music rock Bop Bebop and Avant-Garde

After his first year studying music theory at the Manhattan School of Music he began performing regularly with Jackie McLean. After he graduated he made his first jazz recording, McLean's Right Now!, which featured two of Willis' compositions. His first recording of any type, however, was as a singer with the Music and Arts Chorale Ensemble, performing an opera by Aaron Copland under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. He decided to concentrate on jazz because of the difficulties African American musicians had in finding work in concert music. He is still recording and touring around the world. Truly a legend in the Jazz world.
Throughout his illustrious career he has performed with a wide range of musicians, including a stint of seven years as keyboardist for Blood, Sweat & Tears (beginning in 1972). His latest recording with Paul Murphy Excursions is a must hear for anyone interested in the high energy fusion principals of Bebop and Avant-Garde Jazz. This is Jazz at an impressive new level.

Some of the other musicians he has played and recorded with include Paul Murphy, Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, Hugh Masekela, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Clifford Jordan, Carmen McRae, Shirley Horn, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Earl May, David "Fathead" Newman, Alphonse Mouzon and Carla Bley.

Gerald Cannon

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, Gerald's initial inspiration was his father Benjamin, a guitarist. At age 12, he began playing bass with his father's group "The Gospel Expressions". Gerald attended the University of Wisconsin where he met jazz legend Milt Hinton, who profoundly influenced his life.

At age 28, Gerald came to New York City and immediately began to play professionally there with some of the most prestegious names in jazz such as: Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, The Cedar Walton Trio, Dexter Gordon.

Gerald was also a longtime member of The Roy Hargrove group and toured the world with that band. He also held the bass chair with the legenderary Elvin Jones and his group.

Willie Jones III

Born in Los Angeles, CA on June 8, 1968, Jones' earliest exposure to music was his father, Willie Jones II, an accomplished and notable jazz pianist, who offered guidance and inspiration to his gifted son. Dedicated to the further development of his skills, Jones III spent the next few years working diligently with acclaimed drummers and music instructors, and began performing with distinguished musicians by the time he was in his teens. Jones completed his academic training after receiving a full scholarship to the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied under the tutelage of the legendary Albert "Tootie" Heath.

Before he was a semifinalist in the 1992 Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition, Jones co-founded Black Note, one of the most promising jazz bands around. Following the rich soulful energy of the West Coast bop movement, Black Note's hard-swing sound propelled them to First Place in the 1991 prestigious John Coltrane Young Artist Competition. Jones contributed his skillfulness as both musician and producer on all four Black Note recordings entitled 43rd & Degnan and L.A. Underground (World Stage Records), Jungle Music (Columbia), and Nothin' But the Swing (Impulse!). By 1994, the band toured Europe and across the U.S., and was the opening act for Wynton Marsalis.

Near the end of 1994, while Jones was reaching for a higher level of drumming dexterity, he gained the privilege of playing sideman to the renowned vibist Milt Jackson. Here was where Jones learned the importance of pacing and sensitivity. Meanwhile, his musical career continued to unfold. From 1995 through 1998, Jones was a member of Arturo Sandoval's band and is featured on Sandoval's Grammy Award winning release Hot House (N2K). Subsequently, Jones recorded with Horace Silver on the album Jazz Has a Sense of Humor (Impulse!), and on Roy Hargrove's CD releases Moment To Moment and Hard Groove (Verve). He can also be heard on Eric Reed's latest release, Here (Max Jazz).

From amongst the many jazz dignitaries who recognized Jones' talent, he attained further critical notice by working with distinctive musicians such as Ernestine Anderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, Billy Childs, Eric Reed, Ryan Kisor, Eric Alexander, Bill Charlap, Michael Brecker and Herbie Hancock.

From 1998-2005, Jones was a member of and toured with the prominent Roy Hargrove's Quintet, and can be heard on Hargrove's latest album release Nothing Serious and RH Factor's Distractions. Continuing the pursuit of musical artistry, Jones not only made his debut as a bandleader in 2000 with his premier record Vol 1...Straight Swingin' (WJ3), but he also revealed his proficiency as a composer as well as a producer. He released his second acclaimed CD in 2002, Vol II...Don't Knock The Swing. Currently, Jones is touring with Eric Reed, Kurt Elling and Hank Jones.
