Ryan Kisor

Ryan Kisor (Trumpet) was born on April 12, 1973, in Sioux City, Iowa and began playing trumpet at age four. In 1990, he won first prize at the Thelonious Monk Institute's first annual Louis Armstrong Trumpet Competition. Mr. Kisor enrolled in the Manhattan School of Music in 1991, where he studied with trumpeter Lew Soloff. He has performed and/or recorded with the Mingus Big Band, the Gil Evans Orchestra, Horace Silver, Gerry Mulligan, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, the Philip Morris Jazz All-Stars, and others. As well as being an active sideman, Mr. Kisor has recorded several albums as a leader, including Battle Cry (1997), The Usual Suspects (1998), and Point of Arrival (2000). He has been a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra since 1994.

Sherman Irby

Born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Sherman began playing music at the age of 12, almost immediately recognizing that it was his life's calling. Upon graduating high school - during which he had the opportunity to play and record with Gospel immortal James Cleveland - Sherman attended Clark Atlanta University, graduating with a B.A. in Music Education. He joined Atlanta-based piano legend Johnny O'Neal's quintet in 1991.

After moving to New York in 1994, Sherman quickly connected with the fertile and vital scene at Smalls, where he was a regular until 1997. Here Sherman caught the attention of Blue Note Records, for which he recorded his first two albums, Full Circle and Big Mama's Biscuits, released in 1996 and 1998 respectively.

During the Smalls period Sherman also toured the U.S. and the Caribbean with the Boys Choir of Harlem in 1995; was a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra from 1995 to 1997; recorded and toured with Marcus Roberts and participated in the incomparable Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead Program during those same years; and began his four year stint with Roy Hargrove in 1997. Recognizing the shift in economics of the record industry, Sherman left Blue Note to form Black Warrior Records, releasing Black Warrior, Faith, and Organ Starter. Departing from Roy Hargrove's ensemble around the same time, Sherman shifted his primary focus to his own group. Although this is his primary commitment, Irby took the opportunity to join the final ensemble of the peerless Elvin Jones in 2004, and after Elvin's passing, joined Papo Va'zquez's Pirates Troubadours. Currently, he has rejoined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and continues to perform with his quartet and his newly formed group, Organomics

Peter Zak

Peter grew up first in Ohio, then in Oakland, California, studying classical piano, then turning to jazz while in high school. Following graduation from U.C. Berkeley, Peter played clubs, concerts and festivals in the San Francisco Bay Area with such artists as Frank Morgan and John Handy.

Since relocating to the East Coast, Peter has come to be recognized as one of the finest emerging pianists on the highly competitive New York jazz scene. He has performed and/or recorded with Junior Cook, George Coleman, Jimmy Cobb, Billy Hart, Ryan Kisor, Etta Jones, Scott Hamilton, Al Foster, Eric Alexander, Walt Weiskopf, and Jon Hendricks, among many others. Since 1995, Peter has also been on the faculty of the New School University Jazz department.

His CD, "The Peter Zak Trio", featuring Al Foster, drums, and Paul Gill, bass, was released in April 2005, on the SteepleChase record label, and his next trio date for the label, "For Tomorrow", featuring Paul Gill and drummer Willie Jones III, followed in early 2006. "My Conception", a solo piano recording, appeared in 2007, and his latest trio recording, "Seed Of Sin", featuring Paul Gill and drummer Quincy Davis, appeared in the spring of 2008.

In 2005, Peter achieved recognition as a composer, receiving a $10,000 grant from the Doris Duke Foundation and Chamber Music America to compose and perform a new work for his jazz trio, which included bassist Paul Gill, and drummer Al Foster.

Carlos Henriquez

Carlos G. Henriquez was born in 1979 in the Bronx, New York. After having studied classical guitar in junior high school, he started playing bass at The Juilliard School's Music Advancement Program. Mr. Henriquez entered LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where he performed in the LaGuardia Concert Jazz Ensemble, which earned first place in the Jazz at Lincoln Center First Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival in 1996, and second place the following year. Mr. Henriquez has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Turre, Eddie Palmieri and Tito Puente, Carlos Santana, and George Benson. He traveled with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra during its 20-city Summer 1998 tour through the United States, Canada and Japan. Mr. Henriquez was also featured in on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Fall 1998 World Tour, which traveled to 33 cities in Europe, South America, and the U.S. Since then, he has recorded, toured, and performed with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Danilo Perez and Celia Cruz, just to mention a few. He is currently working at Jazz At Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis.

Ali Jackson

Born April 3, 1976 into a legacy of jazz musicians, Ali took an early liking to the drums. At the age of two, his talent and potential was immediately recognized by his parents. At the age of five he began studying the piano B which laid the foundation for his melodic approach to the drums.
By the time he was seven, Ali was performing with his father on the streets of Detroit. These outings with his father were valuable lessons in performance and in life. He learned to appreciate the function of his instrument in an ensemble. His father also taught him to keep an open and absorbing mind in music and in life.

Detroit, known for its rich legacy of producing some of the world's finest musicians, was the perfect breeding ground for Ali. He graduated from Cass Technical High School, known for producing some of the most renown names in jazz: Paul Chambers, Donald Byrd, Barry Harris and Geri Allen to name a few. At Cass he performed in numerous ensembles and honed his natural ability.

Ali has been awarded scores of medals and honors for his outstanding musicianship and leadership and he has performed with the Michigan All-State Honors Band and the Detroit Symphonic Honors Band.

Ali won the Clarence Eddins/Blue Bird Inn Scholarship for outstanding music achievement and was selected to be a featured soloist for Beacons in jazz honoring jazz legend Max Roach.

Currently in his senior year at the Mannes College of Music for jazz and contemporary music at the New School for Social Research, Ali continues to enhance his studies in fine art. In conjunction with his education from the Mannes School, he maintains a private study schedule that includes lessons and instruction from master teachers such as Joe Chambers, Charli Persip, Chico Hamilton and Max Roach.

His style, a powerful blend of technical mastery and showmanship, is strongly influenced by his late Uncle Oliver Bops Jackson Jr., Papa Jo Jones and Lionel Hampton. Ali's playing is also influenced by Laurence Williams, Roy Brooks, Elvin Jones, Philly Jo Jones, Ed Blackwell, Tony Williams, Ignacio Berroa, Billy Cobham; and a host of younger drummers: Jeff Tain Watts, Billy Drummond, Lewis Nash, Carl Allen, Ralph Peterson, Kenwood Dennard, Dennis Chambers, Steve Berrios and Herlin Riley.

Ali has always been outspoken in making sure that young people are properly informed about jazz and its tradition. For the past three years Ali has been part of Young Audiences, a program that strives to educate New York City youth about jazz.
Ali has performed and recorded extensively. He has worked with some of the world's finest musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Aretha Franklin, Marcus Roberts, Gerald Albright, Eric Reed, KRS-ONE, Russell Gunn, Jacky Terrason, Rodney Kendrick, Buster Williams, Cyrus Chestnut, Chris McBride, James Moody, Vinx, Marcus Printup, Nicolas Payton, Milt Hinton, Craig Handy, Thelonius Monk Jazz Ambassodors, James Morrisson, New York City Ballet, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

Along with the wealth of experience he has obtained as an accompanying artist, these diverse musical styles, concepts, and creative innovations are demonstrated in his musical compositions. This is documented on his innovative expressions on his debut release Groove@Jazz en tete distributed on Blue Geodesics, France.

Even though Ali has achieved a great deal of respect and success as a percussionist, his passion resides not only in performance also with composition and production.

He continues to work toward mastery of his instrument, thoroughness in stylistic altruism as well as complete and divine spirituality through his compositions.

Through his continued drive, integrity and spirit Ali continues to support and perpetuate the foundations of jazz: Spontaneity, freedom and spirituality.

Ali has residences in New York City, Seattle, Washington, and Yokohama, Japan
