Jazz / Bop

This unique solo piano album by Al Haig was recorded on May 6th 1976 at New York's Vanguard Studios. It is being released now on CD for the first time in the U.S. Al Haig was born in Newark, New Jersey on July 22, 1924. Starting early as a boy, he played piano, harp and clarinet. He started concentrating on the piano when he entered Oberlin College in 1940. He then joined the Coast Guard. After his service, he headed to Boston to play with Rudy Williams. When he heard Dizzy Gillespie on the radio from New York, he became drawn to New York and arrived in 1944. He polished his craft at the jazz clubs on 52nd Street. At age 20, he joined Charlie Parker's group. By May of 1945, his performances were being singled out in Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker's all-star quintet. Later, he became beloved as an excellent sideman to Charlie Parker as well as to Stan Getz. He was one of the top 'bop' pianists of his time, but never really achieved widespread fame. He went through much personal turmoil when he came under suspicion of murdering his wife in 1969, but was later acquitted. During the '70s, he continued to perform, mostly solo piano, in New York. His achievements were finally recognized during the last decade of his life. He passed away in 1982. Side 1 consists of a medley made up of four songs made famous by Duke Ellington - "Prelude To A Kiss", "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", "Sophisticated Lady" and "In A Sentimental Mood." Side 2 consists of a medley made up of four songs made famous by or were favorites of Charlie Parker - "Yardbird Suite", "Lover Man", "I Remember You" and "Embraceable You." Al Haig was a unique individual as was his music.

Al Haig tends to be overlooked by critics, though he was one of the best bop pianists in the 1950s. But personal troubles, including a murder trial for killing his third wife (he was acquitted) took him out of the spotlight for a time, though this 1976 session from late in his career finds him at the peak of his powers. The unusual setting of a medley for each side of the original LP makes it seem like this may have been a direct-to-disc session, especially due to the rather stingy playing time of 31 minutes. But Haig delivers with a lush arrangement of four of Duke Ellington's best known ballads, followed by a four-song medley dedicated to his former boss Charlie Parker. The latter opens with a relaxed setting of the late alto saxophonist's "Yardbird Suite," continuing into a dreamy takes of "Lover Man," "I Remember You," and "Embraceable You." While Haig's bop chops are in evidence, the pianist never tries to dominate the material with his considerable technique. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Al Haig

Active Decades: '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s
Born: Jul 22, 1922 in Newark, NJ
Died: Nov 16, 1982 in New York, NY
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Bop, Jazz Instrument, Piano Jazz

One of the finest pianists of the bop era (and one who learned from Bud Powell's innovations quite early), Al Haig was quite busy during two periods of his career but unfortunately was pretty obscure in the years between. After serving in the Coast Guard (playing in bands during 1942-1944) and freelancing around Boston, Haig worked steadily with Dizzy Gillespie (1945-1946), Charlie Parker (1948-1950), and Stan Getz (1949-1951); and was on many recordings, mostly as a sideman (including some classic Diz and Bird sessions) but also as a leader for Spotlite, Dawn, and Prestige. However (other than little-known dates in 1954 for Esoteric, Swing, and Period), Haig did not lead any more albums until 1974. He played fairly often during the 1951-1973 period, but was generally overlooked. That changed during his last decade, when he was finally recognized as a bop giant and recorded for Spotlite, Choice, SeaBreeze, Interplay, and several Japanese and European labels.
