This first time on CD for this hard to find album by one of the unsung heroes of jazz. Still alive and well and active in Paris, tenor saxophonist Popkin became known in the sixties when he became one of the leading lights in the Lennie Tristano school following the paths of Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh. A very dedicated musician, Popkin says ''For art to mean something it has to have spontaneity and feeling''. He learned from Tristano that ''you should be able to play something as you hear it and feel it. Your instrument is supposed to be the amplifier that is plugged into your head.'' Lenny is joined by fellow former Tristano-ites, bassist Eddie Gomez and Peter Scattaretico in a program of standards and originals which swing from start to finish.
