This is a rare case where the CD reissue is inferior to the original LP. Put out in 1977 as a double LP that included nine performances from five different all-star groups playing at that year's Montreux Jazz Festival, this single CD just has six of the selections (the remaining tracks have been reissued as "bonus cuts" on other reissues). However what is here is excellent. There are bands headed by pianist Oscar Peterson, vibraphonist Milt Jackson with co-leader bassist Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie (teaming up with his protege Jon Faddis) and Count Basie in addition to one called The Pablo All-Stars Jam; among the sidemen are trumpeters Clark Terry and Roy Eldridge, the tenors of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Zoot Sims and Ronnie Scott, altoist Benny Carter, trombonists Vic Dickenson and Al Grey, guitarist Joe Pass and pianist Monty Alexander. There are lots of fine solos on these fairly basic tunes but get the original double LP if possible. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
