"A keen sense of melody and taste." -- Jazz Guitar Life "A style that ranges from relaxed to fiery." -- Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene "Prodigious technique ... lyrical melodies akin to James Taylor's, which sink into the mind, inviting subconscious lyric-writing from even the most casual listen." -- All About Jazz
* "WHO is playing?" is what you'll ask! With numerous influences but his own distinctive Gibson sound, Nobuki Takamen and his group unleash a roar of original compositions with an incredible chemistry and feel. A great live recording! * Live at the Iridium is the New York mainstay's third release (but first on Summit), and his first live album. * Recorded live with Takamen's regular group at Iridium Jazz Club in NYC on July 15, 2009 approximately two weeks after returning from a Canadian tour including the Montreal Jazz Festival 2009, this performance is heart-pumping and electric, with melodic original lines that'll send chills up your spine!
Nobuki Takamen's third CD is his first for a widely distributed label. Like the guitarist's earlier efforts, this disc focuses on his originals, though recorded live at the Iridium. Joining him are three fine musicians: pianist Hitoshi Kanda, bassist John Lenis, and drummer Yutaka Uchida. Takamen's "Strolling in Downtown" is a breezy tune that needs lyrics; his spacious, clean lines likely had people humming its catchy theme on the way out of the club. "14-1" is a hip uptempo bop vehicle with a few Afro-Cuban interludes thrown in. "Smile" is not the old Charlie Chaplin song but a laid-back, hopeful ballad penned by the leader. "One Big Shot" practically explodes with its hard bop energy, while the understated "Union Square Nobels" is a piano-less affair, focusing on the leader's intimate guitar. Takamen is a talented guitarist, though including one or two familiar songs might have helped listeners better assess his abilities. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi |
