Cochemea Gastelum, one of New York City's most in-demand saxophonists, has been a key player in the blossoming new soul and Afrobeat scenes that have leapt out of Brooklyn to take the world by storm in recent years. The versatile Brooklyn-based musician has performed and/or recorded with a diverse group of artists, including Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Archie Shepp, Paul Simon, Antibalas,Public Enemy, The Roots, The Budos Band, Robert Walter's 20th Congress and Amy Winehouse. With 'The Electric Sound of Johnny Arrow,' his debut release as a solo artist, Gastelum has carved out a whole new sound.

An eclectic listener as well as player, Gastelum has drawn from a myriad of influences, including the effects-laden excursions of Eddie Harris' electric saxophone, the percussion-driven orchestrations of War and the winding horn dimensions of Mulatu Astatke. 'The Electric Sound of Johnny Arrow,' co-produced by Adam Dorn (AKA Mocean Worker), is a collection of instrumentals that range across the global rhythmic horizon, from Afro-centric jazz to keyed-down 'Low Rider' jams, to vintage boogaloo, raw soul, lilting Brazilian strains, and beyond. Through it all, Gastelum peels back the layers of his story through his horn.

'The Electric Sound of Johnny Arrow is about the end of one journey and the beginning of another,' the artist notes. 'It's about staying true to the inner voice, respecting the ancestors and those who pioneered before us.'

Gastelum not only pays tribute to to his elders' ways and sounds, but respects that very pioneering spirit with which they blazed new trails, where others had not yet been before -- fearlessly creating a sound that is at once past, present and future. The project was inspired by a dream he had that related back to his Native American roots. Upon this realization, the complete vision for the album was formed. With this debut release, Cochemea Gastelum at last steps out, front and center, reaching from the past into to the future while remaining in the ever-present now.

Album Description
Cochemea Gastelum is one of New York City's most in-demand horn players, a frequent touring member of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and a recurring saxophonist in the original band for the Broadway musical, Fela! The Brooklyn-based multi-reedist has performed and/or recorded with a diverse group of artists, including Paul Simon, Antibalas and Amy Winehouse. Now, at long last, this key figure of New York City's underground Afrobeat-Soul community will drop his highly anticipated debut album, The Electric Sound Of Johnny Arrow. This ten-track collection, co-produced by Adam Dorn (AKA Mocean Worker), is guaranteed to be some of the fiercest music to hit the streets this summer. Gastelum draws from his love of Eddie Harris, War and Mulatu Astatke, writing concise songs that leap from the speakers with the energy and focus of his influences, while creating a sound that is at once past, present and future. The idea for Johnny Arrow was inspired by a dream Gastelum had that related back to his Native American roots. Upon this realization, the complete vision for the album was formed. With the release of The Electric Sound Of Johnny Arrow, Cochemea Gastelum steps out front and center to introduce his own voice to the fray.

Even fans of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings might not be totally prepared to hear The Electric Sound of Johnny Arrow by Dap-Kings saxophonist Cochemea Gastelum. This wide-ranging and expansive modern dance recording takes Gastelum far beyond retro rhythm & blues, or his main axe for that matter. Overdubbing a dizzying array of instruments including many different saxes (tenor, alto, baritone), bass clarinet, organ, Fender Rhodes, other electric keyboards, vibes, flute, percussion, and vocals, he also blows up what might be termed funk, approaching acid jazz territory while retaining original soul tendencies. He does use a rhythm section for under-the-surface rhythmic purposes, more overt on the Latin funk party song "Carlito!" His usage of electric sax definitely reminds you of Eddie Harris on an upbeat "Guardian Angel" or the soul ballad "You're So Good to Me," while the pure Stax sound is also not far removed from "No Goodbyes," combined with a Roy Ayers-influenced vibes track. There's Afro-beat melded with psychedelia, updated boogaloo, stabbing go-go sounds, and even faux strings married to hip-hop, while the title track sounds like something straight out of Austin Powers. As a concept depicting the fictitious life of Johnny Arrow, one wonders if he was a spy, movie superstar, cousin of James Brown and Isaac Hayes, slick entrepreneur, or all wrapped into one. No matter the image perception, Gastelum has made music that is danceable, timeless, ethnically tinged, and futuristic -- no mean feat in crossover commercially-driven pop culture. ~ Michael G.
