What Vera Lynn was to the British during World War II, Jo Stafford was to the Americans, and the effect lingered into the 1950's and Korea. During those years, Jo came across as someone who did not care for stardom and who did not want to stand above the crowd. The American soldiers, who adored her, called her "G.I Jo", in an era in which they were known themselves as "G.I.'s" or "G.I. Joe's".
