The savvy Jo Stafford fan will enjoy this 2001 compilation from Vocalion, which omits many of her often-heard classics -- "You Belong to Me," "Candy," "Shrimp Boats," "My Darling, My Darling," "Make Love to Me!," "Some Enchanted Evening" -- in order to air more obscurities. Stafford, one of the most talented singers of the '40s, combined bewitching vocals and interpretive skills to earn respect from critics and the public. As such, it's a treat to hear more than just the hits of the day. Granted, Just Reminiscin' does include a few of her middle-level chart entries, like "Serenade of the Bells," "Feudin' and a Fightin'," "The Stanley Steamer," "Day by Day," and "The Gentleman Is a Dope." But the majority of the compilation consists of sides that rarely get aired, including the Irving Berlin standard "Love and the Weather" and her cornpone "Clabberin' Up for Rain" (Stafford was a superior novelty singer). ~ John Bush, All Music Guide |
