"Exhilarating." -- New York Times "Liebman is among the most important saxophonists in contemporary music. A leader and artist of integrity and independent direction." -- DownBeat "He's completely inside the instrument and the result is a forceful complexity that no one, with the possible exception of John Coltrane, has been able to match." -- Chicago Tribune
Features all-new arrangements of Dave Liebman's compositions, including "As Always" arranged by Grammy finalist Pete McGuinness ("Smile"). Made up of the brightest, most creative New York jazz musicians, the level of musicianship in Liebman's band is so high that it easily breaks the boundaries of the traditional big band. In addition to Liebman's compositions and the writer's creative arrangements, the unique sound of the DLBB is due to how easily the group traverses the line between tonality and atonality, executes dramatic stylistic changes and, most importantly, creates collaborations of improvised music that are so well-aligned with the compositions it is hard to tell what is improvised. This, coupled with Liebman's never-ending pursuit of all possible avenues of expression in his soprano sax playing, offers the listener a new approach to the big band tradition. |
