This first release in CANDID's new COLLECTORS SERIES is a previously unreleased double CD featuring the British tenor giant Tubby Hayes, caught here in scintillating form Live at the Ronnie Scott club, London in 1964. Sitting in with the maestro were visiting Americans Cat Anderson (in town with the Duke Ellington Orchestra) and tenor man Sal Nistico of the Woody Herman band together with the then rising young bass star Albert Stinson. Also on hand were the Swede Rolf Ericson (also with the Duke) and ace Scottish trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar - leader of the Quintet in Disc Two and a regular soulmate of Tubby's over the years. The double set is topped off with interview of Tubby and Sal conducted by producer Les Tomkins.
British tenor giant Tubby Hayes - heard here in a brace of excellent live recordings from the mid 60s, most with some surprising guests as well! The first half of the set features an unusual meeting - Hayes' tenor with the trumpet of Cat Anderson and flugelhorn of Rolf Ericson, in a group that also features more trumpet from Jimmy Deuchar – recorded at Ronnie Scott's with long, open-ended tracks that really let all players jam nicely – almost as if Tubby was stepping into one of those great late 50s Prestige blowing sessions! If know Tubb's talent on the tenor, you'll know that he's in great form in a setting like this - and the recording features 4 long tracks that include "Mean To Me", "Split Kick", "Oleo", and "Inventivity". The second batch of tracks features a 1964 live set with Sal Nistico on tenor - in a group that also features Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet and Terry Shannon on piano - on long versions of "Friends' Blues" and "Just Friends". The set's completed by a 17 minute take on "Stella By Starlight" - by the Deuchar Quintet with Hayes sitting in - and there's also a bit of interview material with Tubby and Sal Nistico too!
