... to be an individual with his own voice, telling his own story, in his own manner. These are the same qualities that iI see in my influences which include Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Lester Young, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and others.
As Charlie Parker so eloquently put it, " If you don't live it, it wont come out of your horn." This, I believe, is an extremely valid statement.
Over the years, one of the nice things about Delmark Records has been its willingness to document talented but obscure improvisers. If Delmark leader Bob Koester felt that a little known jazzman needed to be recorded, he would do so simply on the basis of artistic merit. In 1994, one such improviser was Andrew Lamb, an expressive, probing tenor saxophonist along the lines of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, John Coltrane and Yusef Lateef. Avoiding overdone standards, the post-bopper does all of the writing on this pianoless CD, which employs Warren Smith on vibes, Wilber Morris on bass and Andrei Strobert on drums. Lamb, like his main influences, is a very spiritual player, and that spirituality serves him well on such originals as the dusky "Bohemian Love Affair," the haunting "Morning of the Black Swan" and the Latin-influenced "Negretta Mia." Lamb's playing is more inside than outside--all of his songs have recognizable melodies--although when he does venture outside, one sometimes hears traces of Albert Ayler. Portrait in the Mist falls short of being a gem, but it's a decent outing from a player who deserved be documented. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
Andrew Lamb
Active Decades: '90s and '00s Genre: Jazz Styles: Opera, Post-Bop, Free Jazz, Underground Rap, Avant-Garde Jazz
Tenor saxophonist Andrew Lamb is capable of screaming like a full-blooded free jazzer, but more often than not he prefers to work a high-energy middle ground between bop and the avant-garde, in terms of both tone and harmony. Lamb was born in Clinton, NC, and grew up partly in Chicago before eventually putting down roots in New York. Having studied with AACM charter member Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Lamb came onto the city's avant-garde scene just as it was winding down in the '70s, and thus wasn't documented for quite some time. In the meantime, he became an active presence on the Bedford-Stuyvesant arts scene, eventually winning a grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council. In 1994, Lamb finally got the chance to lead a session for Delmark; he composed all the pieces on Portrait in the Mist, which featured a backing unit of vibraphonist Warren Smith, bassist Wilber Morris, and drummer Andrei Strobert. Lamb and his backing ensemble became a regular presence in the New York area, especially around Brooklyn, and frequently played the annual Vision Festival, which began in 1996. In 2001, he took part in Alan Silva's big-band project the Sound Visions Orchestra, and the following year he toured with AACM-affiliated drummer Alvin Fielder. ---Steve Huey, All Music Guide |
