Denise Donatelli, vocals

Musical Direction by Geoffrey Keezer

"Denise Donatelli. A dark, enchanting voice, an intuitive ability to tell a musical story, and ineffable rhythmic drive. All the qualities one looks for in a fine jazz vocalist." --- Don Heckman, International Review of Music

The problem with jazz singing is that almost no two listeners can agree on exactly what it is. Fans of unbridled scatting tend to dismiss vocalists with a more lyrical side; listeners who who enjoy lyrical storytelling have less regard for performers who use the words as vehicles for ostentatious display. This makes the singing of Denise Donatelli particularly remarkable, since her style is able to employ the positive aspects of those two camps. The first thing you notice is the rich timbre of Donatelli's voice, which has the clarity and flexibility to sing almost any imaginable genre from pop/blues to operatic aria. With musical direction, arrangements and keyboard contributions by Geoffrey Keezer and the participation of musicians such as Ingrid Jensen, Hamilton Price, Peter Sprague and others, Denise Donatelli here shows herself to be a jazz singer who belongs in the upper echelon of modern jazz vocalists. Her performance, along with the accompaniment from an ensemble of first-call players makes this a first-rate recording.

The singing of Denise Donatelli is particularly remarkable, since her style is able to employ the positive aspects of both unbridled scat-singing and lyrical balladry. Of special note is the rich timbre of Donatelli's voice, which has the clarity and flexibility to sing almost any imaginable genre from pop/blues to operatic aria. With musical direction by Geoffrey Keezer and the participation of musicians such as Ingrid Jensen, Hamilton Price and others, Denise Donatelli here shows herself to be a talent who belongs in the upper echelon of modern jazz vocalists.

Denise Donatelli got a late start in her career as a jazz singer, as she first devoted herself to her work at CNN while reserving her family. For her third CD the talented alto again utilizes the talents of keyboardist/arranger Geoff Keezer, with guitarist Peter Sprague, bassist Hamilton Price and drummer Jon Wikan rounding out the rhythm section, with a few guests on some tracks. She expands her musical horizon a bit more on this release, though there are still plenty of standards. Donatelli swings hard with her rousing interpretation of "It's You Or No One." She shimmers in her romantic duet with Keezer of "Why Did I Lose You." Ron Blake is added on tenor sax for the vocalist's enchanting rendition of Benny Carter's timeless "When Lights Are Low." She's equally comfortable with Cedar Walton's demanding "Enchantment (Firm Roots)." Donatelli ventures into Brazilian music, including a touching, lush rendition of the Ivan Lins/Vitor Martins bossa nova (with English lyrics by Alan & Marilyn Bergman), backed by strings and with superb solos by soprano saxophonist Ron Blake and Keezer. She also offers a playful, breezy take of "The Telephone Song" with Sprague (on acoustic guitar) and Wikan (on pandeito) as her sole accompanists. There are a few twists. Donatelli performs Sting's "Big Lie, Small World" as an infectious bossa nova with a bit of Afro-Cuban seasoning thrown in by Keezer, the backing vocals of the wife and husband team of Julia Dollison and Kerry Marsh, plus bass clarinet and cello. The backing is similar for her warm interpretation of the obscure pop ballad "The Bed I Made." Denise Donatelli continues to make impressive strides after her delayed entrance into jazz. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi

Denise Donatelli

Active Decade: '00s
Genre: Vocal
Styles: Vocal Jazz

Jazz singer Denise Donatelli first revealed a music inclination when she picked out "Silent Night" on the piano at the age of three; at six, she was a winner at the National Music Federation piano competition, and 14 years of classical piano study followed. But she laid aside her musical career to raise a family. Later, after divorcing in the late 1980s and moving to Atlanta, she began performing jazz, earning a residence at the Ritz Carlton Hotel; later, she relocated to Los Angeles. Jazzed Media released her debut album, In the Company of Friends, on June 7, 2005. It was followed on August 12, 2008, by What Lies Within (Savant Records), which reached #11 on the National Jazz Week radio chart. Two years later, on September 14, 2010, came her third album, When Lights Are Low.
