Notes by Zan Stewart On the one occasion in the early '80s that I met with the renowned composer and arranger Gil Evans, he discussed his fondness for the rock guitarist-singer-composer Jimi Hendrix. "He was a natural songwriter," Gil said. "He wrote about things that happened in his life." That's what the dynamic, on-the-rise vibes player Matthias Lupri does: compose lyrical, contemporary jazz instrumentals based on his experiences. "I get a lot of motivation from everyday life," he says. "I mainly try to express my life, as I see it, with my own voice through the jazz idiom."

Lupri's third album, the splendid Same Time Twice, offers a brace of fresh originals that have an open, now feel. This is a far cry from the hard rock that the German-born, Canadian-raised drummer-turned-vibist played during and after his high school years in Cochrane, Alberta. But by the mid-to-late '80s, he'd become intrigued by jazz as played by people like Gary Burton, John Coltrane and Bill Evans. Wanting to compose and improvise, Matthias entered the jazz program at Mount Royal College in Calgary; he also began to play vibes. Though he continued to play rock drums for several more years, jazz eventually became dominant. "I was struck by the intensity and beauty of jazz," he says, "especially hearing the vibes played that very modern way, like Gary and Mike Mainieri played."....

Original jazz with the sweet sounds of the vibraphone and the modern forward thinking players of today's NYC jazz scene.

Lupri's third album, the splendid Same Time Twice, offers a brace of fresh originals that have an open, now feel. - Zan Stewart, writer for Down Beat and Los Angeles Times (Liner Notes)

Vibraphonist Matthias Lupri has gained international attention because of his mastery of this percussion instrument, a rare one in the jazz idiom, but one that he induces to speak in a beautiful array of musical colors and textures. On Same Time Twice, the Berklee graduate teams up with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonist Mark Turner, acoustic bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, all excellent leaders in their own right. But despite the giant-sized talent of this ensemble, there are no conflicts of jazz interests here, just splendid complementing and soloing and audacious improvising. This highly listenable straight-ahead jazz collection boasts 11 brand new songs, all written by Lupri and packed with the significant vibrato and production concepts that he has gleaned over the years from such master vibists and educators as Gary Burton and Lionel Hampton. However, this stellar set is played in the ensemble's own voice, with a variation on the typical vibraphone sound, as Lupri runs through a pickup and guitar amp. "Same Time Twice" opens the program, and includes excellent simultaneous solos from Rosenwinkel and Hutchinson over the ending vamp. Throughout the song, they set a pattern of sound replicated by the group in amplitude and pitch, even though the group's improvisations are independent of each other. The group's approach to chromatic harmony gives the impression of exotic origins on the dulcet-titled "Jade." Lupri's lyricism and modulations form its beautiful melody and sentimental tone, while Hutchinson and Rogers supply just the right tempo and emotion. "You Just Never Know" and "After Hours" are pensive ballads that are both provocative and soothing, and yet still entertain. Overall, Same Time Twice exceeds the expectations and satisfaction heard on Lupri's previous two releases, Window Up Window Down and Shadow of the Vibe, providing a continuum for Lupri's vibraphone and compositional values and creativity. ~ Paula Edelstein, Rovi

Matthias Lupri

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Contemporary Jazz, Jazz Instrument, Vibraphone/Marimba Jazz

Acclaimed jazz vibraphonist Matthias Lupri was born in Germany, but grew up in both Kansas and Alberta, Canada. He discovered music as a teenager, learning the drums and playing in a variety of bands -- playing blues, rock, and country, among other styles. While studying music in college, Lupri became intrigued with jazz vibraphone, after coming across a recording by Gary Burton. Even though he was playing in rock bands at the time, Lupri would find time to practice the vibraphone each and every day, eventually enrolling at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, to study with none other than his mentor, Burton. 1998 saw the release of Lupri's debut recording, Window Up Window Down (on the Chartmaker label), which charted in the Gavin Top 40 and the Top 15 of CMJ's Jazz Charts, subsequently supporting the release with gigs at the Boston MIX Festival at Foxboro Stadium and the Knitting Factories in N.Y.C., Toronto, and Montreal. Lupri's sophomore release, Shadow of the Vibe, was issued a year later, but it only really served as a showcase for his budding talents which would burst free on the next record. Same Time Twice was far more innovative and pleased fans and critics alike.
