Concord Jazz is proud to announce the release of Daylight at Midnight, the newest album from the pianist/composer T. Eigsti. This innovative collection includes original Eigsti compositions, as well as other remarkable musical renditions by composers such as Nick Drake, Imogen Heap, Elliot Smith and Rufus Wainwright. The 11-track collection marks Eigsti's third Concord Jazz release.

On Daylight at Midnight, T. Eigsti continues to challenge the norms of what constitutes jazz today. While Eigsti pays full respect to the jazz tradition, he also exercises his passion for melodies of esteemed songwriters from his generation and explores a variety of music that piques his curiosity. In this collection, he not only finds resonance in the aforementioned top-tier, pop-oriented composers... but also brings to light a doubleheader of personal revelation: 20th-century Catalonian classical pianist Federico Mompou and up-and-coming vocalist/songwriter Becca Stevens, who sings five of the 11 tunes and adds her own flavors of the ukulele and charango. As fitting for an adventurous repertoire, the young pianist augments his unique and lyrical style with the Fender Rhodes, Rhodes PianoBass, Wurlitzer electric piano and Mellotron samples to add color and texture to the tunes.

Daylight at Midnight opens with an inventive instrumental interpretation of Coldplay's "Daylight," where Eigsti's brilliant piano lines & his simpatico rhythm team of bassist Harish Raghavan and world-renowned jazz drummer Eric Harland create beautiful and unpredictable sound waves. The end of the tune affirms Eigsti's principle, stating, "I can play standards the rest of my life. But I wanted to step away to see what I could do that was different."

The first track is followed by producer Pierson's selections: Wainwright's "The Art Teacher," which is an instrumental piece that showcases the pianist's adept Fender Rhodes accompaniment, and " The Water," which features luminous vocalist Becca Stevens in a sensual, yet confident and concentrated manner. Stevens also stars on Imogen Heap's "Little Bird," a whimsical tune that is performed as a duo with Fender Rhodes, and on Elliot Smith's reflective beauty "Between the Bars" as well as the collaborative originals, "Magnolia" and "Midnight After Noon." Of the latter piece, Eigsti explains, "I'd been trying to finish this song for some five years…Once the words came, I realized that the loop melody I had written started sticking in my head." In the middle section of the album, Eigsti strips his band down to a duo with guest guitarist and longtime musical partner, Julian Lage, on Nick Drake's "Pink Moon."

Even as important as Daylight at Midnight is to T. Eigsti's growth as an artist, the pianist is already thinking about his next musical projects. The once prodigious child pianist is unsatisfied staying static. He is always craving for change in a new music project or exploring different sounds. "With Daylight at Midnight, I wanted to tap into the singer-songwriter world, which will hopefully lead to the next compositional phase in my musical development."

T. Eigsti's third recording for Concord emphasizes a pop vocal component as well as his excellent keyboard work. With Becca Stevens singing on five tracks, Eigsti seems to be targeting the youth market rather than emphasizing his formidable and proven talent to play contemporary instrumental jazz. Covers of tunes by Coldplay, Rufus Wainwright, Feist, Nick Drake, Imogen Heap, MuteMath, and Elliott Smith center the sound of this disc, all done with only a subtle flair for the dramatic. Stevens has a supple, understated voice that lends itself well to late-night excursions, suggesting gypsy tales told in trip-hop trim. The recording gets more delicate and somber as it goes along, but Eigsti does take a broader view in funky modal, spiritual, soulful, electronic, and folk-like styles early on. Coldplay's "Daylight" is delightful and fun, while a version of Drake's "Pink Moon" -- accented by the acoustic guitar of Julian Lage -- is sweet, while Stevens singing Heap's "Little Bird" could easily be deemed an adult contemporary radio hit. Eigsti's playing itself is both interesting and intriguing, while the exceptional drummer Eric Harland keeps the beat flowing and expanding through each track. It's not his best work -- that is to come for such a young player -- but Eigsti felt compelled to do this project based on his broad level of musical experience, and a taste beyond jazz. ~ Michael G. Taylor Eigsti

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Born: Sep 24, 1984 in Menlo Park, CA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Modern Creative, Post-Bop, Mainstream Jazz

Pianist/composer Eigsti is a precocious and prodigious jazz talent based in Menlo Park, CA. His style is enthusiastic, straightforward, and swinging, with elements of stride, bop, soul, and funk. He began piano lessons at the age of four, opened for David Benoit when he was eight, performed with Dave Brubeck at 13, and recorded his first CD at 14, with Dan Brubeck on drums. Eigsti's musical parents were supportive of his career, but also made sure he had a normal childhood, including pursuing his love of basketball despite the risk to his hands. Attracted early on to the spontaneity of jazz, Eigsti's first taste of Art Tatum inspired him to explore the worlds of Oscar Peterson, Gene Harris, Monty Alexander, Phineas Newborn, and Benny Green, among others, while ongoing classical studies helped forge his formidable technique.
After studying at the Stanford Jazz Workshop for several years, he joined their teaching staff at age 15. A year later, Red Holloway, who'd heard T. Eigsti perform in San Jose, invited him to be his band's special guest on the prestigious SS Norway jazz cruise; two years later, he headlined on the cruise with his own trio. Eigsti has opened for Diana Krall, Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, and Hank Jones; in 2001, he performed at three "Rising Star" concerts at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. Graduating as salutatorian of his high-school class, Eigsti went on to jazz studies at USC. In September of 2002 Eigsti's well-oiled trio, including bassist John Shifflett and drummer Jason Lewis, made its first appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival. A recorded debut of sorts, Taylor's Dream, appeared on the Japanese label DIW in 2001. Eigsti's June 2003 national CD debut, Resonance, on Bop City, demonstrated both his achievements and sky's-the-limit potential as a first-rate player and composer. Moving to the Concord label, Eigsti released Lucky to Be Me in 2006 and Let It Come to You in 2008.
