Jazz trumpeter B. Goode is back with his fourth Delmark CD, Tight Like This (yes, the same "Tight Like This" recorded by Louis Armstrong's Hot 5). He is accompanied by Adrean Farrugia, piano; Kelly Sill, bass; Anthony Lee, drums. A review of Goode's previous Delmark CD said: "Goode's command of the trumpet allows for plenty of risk-taking moments, drenched with technical astonishment and raw emotion. With an abundance of melodic ideas, the Chicago native walks a musical tightrope, creating a rush of improvised suspense. His free-flowing approach, most notably on "I Remember You" and "No Idea", is playful and refreshingly unsentimental. Nature Boy (Delmark 578) emphasizes everything genuine going on in jazz today. Goode and company are performing at an incomparable level, at once virtuosic and innovative." -John Barron, All About Jazz
Trumpeter & jazz educator B. Goode offers a diverse program in Tight Like This. Joined by pianist Adrean Farrugia, bassist Kelly Sill, and drummer Anthony Lee, Goode delivers a fresh take of the old chestnut from the 1920s made famous by Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five (in which Farrugia works in "Eleanor Rigby" and "Hot House," among other songs, into his improvisation), incorporating both old and new styles in his arrangement. The trumpeter's complex post-bop reworking of Walter Donaldson's "Changes" takes it far from the expected path, while Goode's playful muted horn is a highlight of the laid-back, funky treatment of "Reverse the Charges," which is also highlighted by Sill's tasty bass solo. "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise" has long been a favorite of jazz musicians, but Farrugia's unusual accompaniment gives it a new dimension. Goode also penned several strong originals, highlighted by the moody ballad "Midwestern Autumn" (featuring his moving muted trumpet) and his hip "Bob's Bounce," in which he soars over the solid groove of his rhythm section. Recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi

Multi-instrumentalist (trumpet, bass, drums) Goode was born in 1963 in Chicago. He began learning violin at the age of four, switching to guitar and cornet seven years later, and by the time he graduated from high school he was already playing professional gigs as a bassist and trumpet player. Goode studied with trumpeter Vincent DiMartino at the University of Kentucky, earning his undergraduate degree from there in 1985, and then studied double bass with Larry Gray at DePaul University, leaving with a master's degree in 1987. Although he has played professionally as both a bassist and a drummer, Goode is best known for his work on the trumpet, and has led his own jazz combos as well as playing with the likes of Red Rodney, Jack DeJohnette, Al Cohn, Curtis Fuller, Eddie Harris, Frank Morgan, and many others. He has taught at several schools, including the American Conservatory of Music, Cuyahoga Community College, the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. His albums include Shock of the New (Delmark, 1989), Brad Goode (Sunlight, 1995), Toy Trumpet (Steeplechase, 2001), By Myself (Steeplechase, 2001), and Hypnotic Suggestion (Delmark, 2006). ---Steve Leggett, All Music Guide |
