H. Person is a gentleman of jazz, a versatile player who honors the compositions he has assembled in his discography with a seemingly effortless approach that's elegantly sensuous and unabashedly romantic. There's a smooth, creamy warmth to his tone, but a decidedly muscular undercurrent keeps saccharine sweetness firmly at bay. His players provide superbly understated, gently swinging support with the trumpet of Terell Stafford receiving plenty of time in the spotlight from the ever-generous Houston. Beautifully recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, Houston explores and elaborates on melodic themes with unhurried ease. His lines are resolutely lyrical, gently toying with the melodies yet never compromising the essential structure; reflecting upon rather than re-inventing each composition. It's just first-rate music played with exquisite taste and an emphasis on the sheer beauty of timeless tunes.
In his mid-seventies at the time of this record date, tenor saxophonist H. Person shows no signs of slowing down; he's accompanied here by musicians who are, for the most part, at least a generation younger. Person's lush tone is a major part of the standards of the date, including a dreamy "I Cover the Waterfront" and a snappy "Moment to Moment." Person is so lyrical in "Don't Take Your Love from Me" one can easily imagine the late vocalist Etta Jones singing softly along with his horn. Trumpeter Terell Stafford proves to be an excellent foil for the veteran, especially in the driving setting of Person's hard bop vehicle "Bleeker Street," while his Louis Armstrong-accented playing in the laid-back blues "Back in New Orleans" nearly steals the show. While alto sax great Phil Woods is widely known for adding the trademark solo to the original version of rock pianist Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," Person offers a more breezy interpretation, sharing a delightful musical conversation with Stafford. The outstanding rhythm section includes previous collaborators such as pianist John Di Martino and bassist Ray Drummond, in addition to guitarist Randy Johnston and drummer Willie Jones III. --- Ken Dryden, Rovi
Houston Person
Active Decades: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s Born: Nov 10, 1934 in Florence, SC Genre: Jazz Styles: Soul, Swing, Soul Jazz, Post-Bop, Hard Bop, Mainstream Jazz, Standards, Smooth Jazz, Jazz Instrument, Guitar Jazz
In the '90s, Houston Person kept the soulful thick-toned tenor tradition of Gene Ammons alive, particularly in his work with organists. After learning piano as a youth, Person switched to tenor. While stationed in Germany with the Army, he played in groups that also included Eddie Harris, Lanny Morgan, Leo Wright, and Cedar Walton. Person picked up valuable experience as a member of Johnny Hammond's group (1963-1966) and has been a bandleader ever since, often working with singer Etta Jones. A duo recording with Ran Blake was a nice change of pace, but most of Houston Person's playing has been done in blues-oriented organ groups. He has recorded a consistently excellent series of albums for Muse, eventually switching to HighNote Records for 2006's You Taught My Heart to Sing, 2007's Thinking of You, and 2008's Just Between Friends, which featured bassist Ron Carter. ---Scott Yanow, Rovi |
